Is there a cheap way to do engraving? I want to be able to practice a lot.
A couple people mentioned the N-Graver... any experiences with it? The price list on their website says it's over $200, a bit too expensive for me.
I've also heard a lot about acid etching...what is needed for that? How expensive is it?
Thanks

The Dremel is not an engraving tool.
Engraving is done by cutting the metal with chisels called "gravers."
The cheapest way to practice is to buy some gravers and handles and some scrap metal and try it.
There are several powered engravers on the market. The least expensive is called the "N-Graver." It runs off a flexible shaft machine.
You need good reference books, tools, and you need to look at a lot of good engraving.

Are you still in school? If so, take any graphic art and drafting classes offered. If possible, find a jeweler to apprentice you in engraving.

Filling out your profile might help.

There is a school in Wichita KS.They sell you the machine and supplies ect..I watched and listened to them at a gun show in Tulsa and the salesman called me for years.I would actually like to do it,but time, money, yadayada.Oh,Also,I cant draw worth crap.( :

That would be GRS Systems. They make pneumatic driven engraving setups. They also carry the Ngraver mechanical system.
Steve Lindsey makes the Airgraver, the most refined of the pneumatic engraving tools.
The best way to learn is look, read, draw, buy gravers and cut steel. The mini jackhammers make life a lot easier for an engraver, but learning the basics the hard (and cheap!) way seems to produce a better engraver.

I've taken 2 high school art classes, a drafting class, and some other engineering courses if that helps. But yes, I'm 16--still in school.
