I have been collecting knives for a while now, and was wondering about the finish on some blades. I actually want to learn how to finish a blade the japanese way with stones, but for now, I want to know the best way to hand rub or hand finish a blade, without a Scotch Brite wheel or whatever. By Hand, is the key for me, and up until now, I am only really familiar with the sand paper method of starting with coarse, and all the way up to 1200 grit. Any advice will do. Stones? Sand Paper? anything else? I know it will take practice. thanks in advance.

This sounds like a job for the Knifemaker's Forum. I'm surprised Cougar didn't send it there.

Not to play on words, but sand paper is for wood and not metal. You want to purchase emery paper in different grits depending on the finish you wish to achieve. There are different types of emery which can produce the results quicker then others. Take your time and don't rush it when starting out. Good luck.

Not to play on words, but wet/dry autobody SANDPAPER is the preferred medium to sand blades.
