Blade finishes?

Hello everyone, I have a question about blade finishes on the XM knives. It seems that there are quite a few finishes available for the XMs and I was wondering if anyone had a list of some sort (excluding customs, I was wondering about those available on the production knives).

I know of the stonewash, satin, and beadblast finishes on the production XMs but just wanted to know if any others are produced. The main one I was curious about was the "working" finish. I think it looks great, but I've only ever seen it on one knife and it was a custom.

Working does exist on production pieces but they are mostly, if not only, show release items. As for Satin, that's a custom only offering. The productions are mostly stonewashed (aka tumbled) and blasted. And let us not forget the DLCs.

Thank you!

Please also understand that outside of the tumbled and blasted that the other finishes are released in much smaller numbers. The working finish is found mostly on customs. Shows mix things up a bit and make it very difficult to say all are (fill in the blank) or none are (fill in the blank).
Let me also qualify my statement on the working finish to say that I believe that production XMs exist with that blade finish. They are limited in number all the same.

Working finish is both bead blast and tumbled. And don't forget about sand blasted.

Hi Mike, I have owned XM's with a sandblasted frames but I never saw a sandblasted blade, that would be very easy to scratch IMO.

I have seen stonewashed, bead blast, working finish and even 2 tone XM production blades though, like Need2Know said those last 2 are quite rare indeed.

I like an XM-18 with a sandblasted finish blade. I suppose one could apply sandblast finish to their XM blades as an aftermarket if they want to. But rarely does it come out straight from the Hinderer ranch. The beauty of it is blasted finish blades will simply transform into a working finish after some hard use and when it gets scratches on it. Or you can choose to send it in for reblasting again. I actually prefer it over the DLC finish. Of course the satin and stonewashed finish on the XM blades are timeless Hinderer signature. Here's one of mine.

There is one finish available on standard production knives, tumbled. Occasionally we will prepare production knives with different finishes for knife shows, working finish, bead blast, or sand blasted.

Yep, you just educated the masses on the general procedure. ;).

I know the info was already out there, just teasing a bit.

From the source, you cannot beat the info in this response.

Thank you for this.

Nice!

Just a quick question...why do you prefer blasted over DLC? Is it the slight increase in "grab" felt as you cut with coated blades, or some other reason?

There is also two tone, that's one the of sweetest.
O, and they do put working finish on customs also.

id really like to see more of the "working" finish. mostly on my 3.5" but some pictures of your guys would be nice too.

Well, I prefer stuff that are done in house as much as possible. And aesthetically speaking, I'm not a big fan of coated blades. Just my humble opinion.

Cheers.
