Just curious as to the numbering of the Blade Forums Blue Native, on the blade of my knife is a number; 1 of 300}. Were all of the knives marked the same way or do they go 2 of 300, 3 of 300, etc. ?

In other words, each BF Native is 'one of the 300 made.' Great knife. I uise and carry mine every day. ('Course I have 3 of them!

Thanks guys, I never thought much about a neck sheath before, nor did I own a Native. This is a great combination and I am anxiously awaiting any new Spyderco offerings from Blade Forums.

Phrede,

In total there were actually approximately 700 of the Blue Natives made. The first 200 which were numbered 00 - 200 were for our Collector's program. The Collector's receive the first of everything we produce. The other 500 were originally for Blade Forums but it was determined the quanitity was to large for the interest so we engraved 300 for Blade Forums and sold the remaining 200 to a few dealers and through our local outlet.

The 300 Blade Forum pieces were the only ones engraved with Blade Forums logo. The others were sold as the C41GPSBL, Blue Native.

Hope that sheds some additional light on that project.

Michelle

For the record, I'd like to add that my blue Bladeforums Native is my favorite Spyderco, and right up there with my Sebenza as favorite knife overall. I have also handled a plain Native, and it just doesn't compare. The balance is much better with the heavier G-10 handles.

It's a shame so many people were put off by the price and never got to try one.

Hello Michelle. I didn' t think of it before but weren' t the origins of the blue G10 Native from the members of Bladeforums? There was a long thread that included input as to the color, texture, blade edge and perhaps materials for this particular model. Why then would the Spyderco Collectors get the serial # batch and the Bladeforum members get all the 1 of 300 bunch? It would seem appropriate that the Bladeforum members be offered the serial # ones. Am I asking the correct source for this?

Nakano 2,

Yes you are correct in that the original input fot the Blue Native came from Forum Members. As for why our collector's program would get the serial numbered knives instead of the Forumites: The collector's program has been in existence for more than 10 years. The individuals who participate in this program have agreed to purchase 1 of everything new that Spyderco produces. They each have an individual number that is engraved on their knife, for example, I receive #14 of every Spyderco. The agreement on by Spyderco is that we will ship out the first 200 of every item to them. We do this with all main line production as well as any exclusives that we have done.

Michelle, Does that 200 include knives made for other companies ie. A.G. Russell?

I'll go ahead and ask for everyone here,
Is it still possible to get on that list?

I really feel like a chump for buying one of them. It was obviously not the special deal we were led to believe that it was.

As I remember the events, the forum was included in the design process and kept abreast of the engineering changes and even the agonizing over the blue clip, and there was a great deal of pressure to deliver by a certain show date. The price did increase from an early estimate, butt this was a "Shoot from the Hip" venture.

I remember reading that the 'collector club' would get the first 200, as they always had before. There was a lot of clamor for 'individual' forum members' matched serial number to forum number. That would have added more time and expense, I'm sure.

I do not think anyone was fooled by anyone other than their own expectations, butt you know better than I how you feel, Dan.

Great piece, we were lucky dogs to get them...The best lock back, and the best steel IMO.

Personally I'm very happy with my BF native. I don't think the price was excessive for the quality of the knife, and I don't really care how many were made. All the knives I buy are carry knives, not investments or displays. This is a knife I'm proud to carry. (But it is too nice to carry every day at work. It's my weekend carry) All in all, if I can justify the expense, I'd like to buy another before Mike runs out.

djung,

Yes the 200 also included knives that were made for A.G. Russell.

Kkimo,

I do believe there are several slots in our collector program still available. If interested, you can contact Jill Rackliff in our Sales Department and she can explain to you how it works and what's available.

I'm pleased to have mine. One of 300 in the whole universe, and a very nice knife for only $100. As they say back east- "such a deal..."

Just a thought here folks. Value is truly a 'personal' thing, at least with me. I just bought a plain edge bfn with kydex sheath.....actually paid a bit 'over retail' for this piece. I had to think this one over a bit cause the reason I buy from bf exchange is that I've found some great deals. I had to weigh this one though cause it didn't fit my normal mode of buying from someone 'trading out' of a piece. I really didn't want a serr. version and when they were offered originally I had other priorities....though I would have rather bought a new plain blade from Mike. I don't expect it to be my daily carry....but a special blade to add to my rotation mix. With all said I expect when received I will feel I will have gotten fair value for something of limited supply. Gees I used to buy new Glock high cap mags for $20 and AR mags for $3-$5, can't do that anymore either......again value is personal, just wish I'd have bought up all I saw back then, wouldn't be looking for good 'deals' now.

Folks,

I am very happy with my blue BF Native, as is my friend who was given the other one of the two I got.

It happens to be great utility knife, with very good materials. When it was conceived, the idea was for BF forumites to get a special knife that would also support Bladeforums. I appreciate Spyderco's effort and willingness to step up to the plate.

Did I get a special knife? Yes, for the reason I stated. Did I get a valuable "collector's" knife? Don't know, but that wasn't the intention.

Just wanted to give a little background. When the knife was conceived, BF had around 1200-1500 members. We are now at over 5000. I am not surprised that some members are not familiar with how this knife came to be.
