Blade from a Blade?

When Im not botching up a knife project, I work in construction.
About once every two months we have to get a new Diamond blade for our gas saw.

I have always wondered if something could be made out of the old saw blades?

The diamond blades are over a foot in diameter, are made of some type of steel, and are about as thin as a quarter when they are tossed away.
Anyone have any idea if I could make a knife out of one?
What type of heat treatments?

i don't know what steel they are but i have seen decent eskimo ulu knives that were made by cutting a skil saw blade in thirds or quarters.

If possible, I'd contact the saw blade's manufacturer and ask what steel they are using. If the saw blades are using diamonds for the cutting action, there is a possibility the steel in the blade may not be a cutlery grade steel. I've run into this before with saw blades where the cutting action was provided by carbide tips and the bulk of the saw blade was a mild steel that would not harden.

Why not harden up a piece and give it a try? The way it breaks and the grain structure will let you know.
But, then again, why bother? Plenty of steel around with known compisition that's cheap enough, even for me!
Still cheap, Lynn

Lynn,,,yes you make a good point,,

But the sawblades are around $350 when new, and after a month of so of useing them, I kinda get to know them well,,,they are almost a type of friend (we spend a lot of time cutting with each blade)

yet when they get dull, and they all do, I just take the blade off and toss it into the trench,,,it just seems like such a unfit end to a tool that has helped me so much.

but true, there are many more known steels to play with I guess
