Hello All,
I seen a thread awhile back where someone inquired about the blade grind on Benchmades newer Rant's. Awaiting word back from Benchmade but the previous individual received mixed answers from Benchmade stating both Hollow Grind and Flat Grind. Maybe the older B.I.L.T. version had the hollow grind and they overlooked it when putting the newer catalog together. I looked at one in person and it appeared to me as a high flat ground. Do any of you know the specific grind? Thanks!

hey scout, i believe that was my post your referencing, and yes i did get mixed answers. i'm no expert at blade geometry but after purchasing and handling the knife i feel pretty confident in saying it's a 3/4 flat grind (or high flat grind as you put it). i'm not sure what kind of microbevel may or may not be on the edge (i.e. could it be a hollow ground edge but on a flat ground blade?), but the blade itself appears to be a 3/4 flat grind with a small swedge near the spine. anyone else with more knowledge of this particular blade or blade geometries have any input? or if my understanding of blade grind vs a microbevel is completely off, someone set me straight!

Thanks beestokk, yes I believe I seen your post originally when doing some googling on the subject. When comparing it to my CSK and a fixed Presidio which I do believe are flat/saber ground it looks very similiar. I sent a couple messages into Benchmade to see what they say. I know what you mean by the micro bevel, possibly just a small "v" grind of some sort. Appearance wise it would seem that this knife would have tooken off more than it has, most reviews give it an overall positive rating.

yea, again, i think your description is accurate. i think my questions to benchmade were over the phone where two different reps told me two different things, but the one who sounded more knowledgeable to me said flat grind. yea, microbevel with a small "v" is what i was getting at. i agree that the knife was a bargain, and i got it through a friend who had 40% off! i was surprised it didn't receive more attention as well, but the reviews i did find were all positive...only thing is i wish i could've got the drop point, but the bowie was the only one in stock...although i'm getting over it now as i'm very close to complimenting it with a nice drop point esee/rc-6!

Hey I just got this reply last night from Andy Wagner of Benchmade Customer Service:

James,

Back when the Rant was an imported knife in our Red Class they were hollow ground, but once we started making the knife in house they were flat ground, and that is what we have today.
Thank you,

I believe that's a sufficient answer for me and hope it helps anyone else that was in doubt about it's grind. Although it may not have helped its functionality, a different handle material and maybe an exposed tang would have been a nice touch, possibly G10 or some other durable material but pleasing to the eye as well. Would look somewhat similiar to the CRK Nyala.

cool! glad he got back to you. i'm assuming he meant the B.I.L.T. b/c the 440c Rants were also in the Red Class (prior to moving to Blue when they went to D2), but the generation after the B.I.L.T. gen was made in USA. Mine is the 440 c version, but no B.I.L.T. and as I said it sure looks like a flat grind. Sounds like all USA-made Rants are flat ground then...?? Thanks for the info!

That was my take as well. Ever since the B.I.L.T. series went away they went with the flat grind, both 440C Red Class and D2 Blue Class. I traded for a D2 satin version and is enroute. I would have taken the 440C as well as 440C has always treated me well.

excellent...thanks for sharing your thoughts. good luck with the blade (drop point or bowie...and why?)!!
