Can you explain to me blade style/shape (hawksbill, etc) and what the diff shapes are generally used for....

What is a working knife, vs a knife that is generally carried on your person for self defense....

What makes a knife a "tactical" knife..

Serrated vs. plain

???????????????????

Just trying to learn.....(Got a lot to...)

Grac in advance,

Some blades are mission specific and others are very good at doing many things. Generally speaking hawkbill knives are used for cutting linoleum, however I know of people who use them in dressing game and opening boxes as well. Double edged blades, especially thin pointed dagger and bayonet types are pretty much exclusive to knives that are meant for stabbing. Drop point and other similar blades are great for general purpose uses (hunting, EDC, etc...).

The spey blade was originally designed for speying animals. Since then, it has become popular for many other everyday uses, and has lived on despite the fact that most users are not cowboys or veterinerians.

Personally, the knives that I carry on me are all tools. If I have to use one for self defense, I would have used the tool at hand. In fact, in some areas, carrying a knife with the intent of using it as a weapon is illegal. Generally, tactical knives have a certain look to them, and are designed to be brought into action fast and can be operated with 1 hand. A fighting knife can be either plain or serrated depending on the techniques that you use. On extremely short knives, it is believed by many that paritel serration make little or no difference in performance.
