Hello blade forum, I’m interested in buying a bugout and since the 20cv blade hq one is on sale I decided to get it. My only gripe is the color of the scales. Has anyone rit dyed it, and should I? If so send pics. I’m thinking about dying it black

I've seen many such "dye jobs" on this forum over the years (RIT dye) and I don't believe I've ever seen any that lasted very long. From what I've seen the dye tends to wear off quickly from pocket-wear and handling.

I'm not saying it can't be done in a durable way. It likely depends on the material being dyed. But I don't recall ever seeing it turn out well over the long run.

Another option might be custom/aftermarket handle scales.

Interesting and I was thinking about dying g-10

One of the characteristics of Garolite (G10) that makes it great for knife handles is it's low rate of absorption and resistance to chemicals.

I've seen RIT dye jobs on G10, the dye tends to hold up down in the nooks and crannies, but wears through on the edges and surface areas letting the color underneath show through.

But perhaps someone here knows of a way to stabilize the dye to make it last, or has had the dye hold up over time.

Dye jobs always look good when they're fresh. But how will it look after a week, or a month of carry, handling, and use. If you want black scales that will stay black over time, I think your best option is custom or aftermarket scales.

Also -- what would you do about matching the thumb studs color to the scales?

I only hope to dye the scales black so that it isn’t as noticeable of a knife.

Could you recommend a good place to buy aftermarket scales from, I think you are right, that is my best option.

I have a Benchmade 551 H2o that has scales that have been dyed black. No problems of any type.

There are many online vendors who sell handle scales for the Benchmade Bugout. A quick Google search shows me that the following vendors have black G10 in stock-

SMKW.com

GPKnives.com

Knivesshipfree.com

I can't say that I "recommend" any of those scales because I've never purchased any. I have made several other purchases from SMKW without issue.

It's possible that more searching would find other vendors with black G10 scales in stock.
