Blade HQ Video is up

Whoa, that Phil Wilson flipper is something! I don't recall seeing it in the catalog?

Interesting statement about the PB washers, maybe this is why the cost has gone up? It is a quality component though.

Some excellent pieces for sure, but video confirms that the Tropen blade ends up exposed where the cutout for the compression lock is :(

Anyone catch a name for that Paul Alexander model Eric was talking about?

This is a huge oversight on the part of Spyderco. I know I don’t close my compression locks like Eric did in the video. I like to just flick em shut and that will result in a nasty cut.

I do like that Spyderco is making some knives with smaller footprints. I’ve been waiting on a model that’s in the footprint of the Benchmade 940 and I think they’re pretty close now!

It isn’t a phil wilson flipper. It was designed by Paul Alexander. Eric just said it had a hole in the scale like the wilson.

Sal Glesser Sal Glesser are you guys aware of the issue with the sharp blade intruding into the compression lock cut out on the tropen when the blade is closed?

Also I did a quick search and saw Paul Alexander also designed the Ouroboros and SilverAxe. I couldn’t find any custom knives he had designed though. This reminds me alot of another Spyderco designer Jason Breeden who again seems to have no custom knives. How does Spyderco pick these people to design knives if they have no knives they make themselves? Just curious.

Hi Lapedog,

Spyderco and Paul Alexander go back a long ways. He's a designer for the auto industry s well as an avid Spyderco associate. He's created many designs for us, he makes 3D models and has excellent detailed drawings. We've doe a few of his designs. He really thinks outside of the box. He is Paulwa on the Spyderco site forum and is quite accessible in discussing his designs.

On the Tropen, I'll share your thoughts.

Except you won't, because it doesn't close like a PM2. The flipper acts like a half stop and hits your finger first in this design, so either you keep your finger on the lock and the flipper hits it stopping the blade halfway closed, or you release the lock partway to allow the blade to swing fully shut.

I'm pretty sure we'd have heard many stories from Blade about that dangerous knife Spyderco displayed that cut all the people handling it if this really was a safety issue on the Tropen. Again, my bet is on an unsharpened heel.

Good catch. I see Eric addressed it in the knifecenter video. He said it is sharpened but that the flipper acts as a stop.
