I got my BAS from the 11/29 Honor of Father DOTD today, as usual, very prompt delivery from Yangdu. Question I have regarding this piece, it has the initials U.B. on it, now I know that means Uncle Bill, but I thought that only applied to U B specials. This BAS was made by Bura according to the DOTD specs. It does have the Bura symbol on the left side. I have others that Bura made with his initials, L. B. which stands for Lal Bahadur. So what have I got here, on what models do you see the U.B. initials:confused:

Looks like they all have the U.B. mark.

Mine does and if you look on zoomed pics, they all seem to have it.

Does this answer all your questions?

The U.B. initials have been put on all HI blades for over a year.

That said, some may have slipped by without them.

Eric.

things are beginning to become clear to me, thanks all. I have a couple of HI khurks that go back a year or two, so they do not have U.B. initials, not that I mind the U.B., without Bill there would be no HI. I discovered HI shortly after his passing, but from what I understand he was a great person.

I recently arrived to the HI world, but I've read a lot, the sticky on the top and almost everything on the himalayan imports website.

I never knew Uncle Bill, but from what I saw, he was a great man that deserved respect.

He is one of the reasons I chose to buy a HI khuk (the others being Yangdu's great service and the reviews about quality and efficiency).

For those of you that dont know Uncle Bill requested that his initials be placed on all the blades that were produced by HI after his death. The kami's are honoring this request in respect to the man who helped establish their shop.

IUKE12, how do you like the BAS? Its one of my favorite models. I own three beauties, and they are wonderfully designed. Nothing, to me, carries as easily, and the handle is just big enough. All my khuks smaller than that one aren't as functional. One of my BAS is a shop one I got from JP, who got it from Uncle Bill. I treasure that knife. I've also got a chiruwa one from Sgt Khadka which is possibly my most beautiful khuk. And another villager BAS made by the yin/yang symbol Kami that has a horn handle that is greenish. (Embarassingly, I used to know his name, but have forgotten it.) As I said, its one of my favorite models, and the one you got was so tempting. I don't have a Bura made one yet. Hehehe. So, good snag bro!!! We joined at almost the same time I just noticed. Duh.

I've got a BAS by Bura, my first Khuk, I really, really love the knife. (really !)

It fits me. chops like dream and worked on my TG turkey. Chopped a hard wood stump out of the ground with it, no shovel, no saw. I just hacked through the roots till the stump wasn't attached to the ground anymore. Scratched the blade up a little , no edge damage even though it ate a few rocks, steeled right up and I finished it on a mouse pad w/ 600 grit W/D.

Not having anything to compare it to, I snagged the 12" AK from the 11/29 DOTD. It's nice but it feels like a toy next to the BAS.

Khuk's really are exponential, an inch in length is a bunch of steel.

Guess I need to find a larger AK, 12" is fun, but I think it'll be a Chirstmas present.

Give that 12"er some time:) It really is a hamster in hog's clothing. It looks like a khuk, but while it lacks in the chopping department what you have in your hand is one of the most indestructable wood stomping knives to be had. Treat it more like a ka-bar and you will have a wonderful backwoods companion that won't pull your pants down:)...if that matters to you.
I think i'm just patting my own back. I had a 12" AK a couple years ago that I gave away because it didn't perform like it's bigger brothers. I have a 12" PK and a REALLY nice 12" Uncle Bill Salyan. However, I "need" to get my hands on a pointy little 12" AK one of these days. Lot of fine folks swear by them as a baby khuk companion, and I can see why:)

Oh and Andy, I think his name is Ram. I have the villager style 14" Siru that was his first work offered on the forum. WOW, I don't think I have ever seen such even lines or useful edge on a villager. I would like to see more of his work:)

Well, it looks to be a beauty right out of the shipping box, the edge is sharper than expected. I haven't had it for more than a few hours now, we are still in the admiring stages here. I will get it outdoors and on the trail this weekend. This is my first BAS, I can see why it is a favorite. It appears perfect to carry, not too big nor too small. I was holding out for a villager BAS, but I could resist no longer. I think you need to consider a Bura BAS at some point. We joined about the same time but if you are like me, you were lurking long before. Like your work on the Nessmuks by the way.:)

This line cracked me up! You haven't even gotten to first base with that khuk yet~~~~?:p

I appreciate your liking the nessies too! I've got two more in the works now, and five sheaths. The sheaths are the priority, the knives will take some time.

Hm, the Malla from 11/29 is unusually sharp as well. Hoping the kami's may be trending towards sharper "polished" models.

Also the sisau wood - really, really nice. And a perfect cho, with no cho creep... your guys remember the one... :p that oh-so-inexpensive Malla with no flaws whatsoever... that no one sent for... that one.

A Bura Villager BAS was my first khuk - one year ago today!! :D Here's mine.
That is a smoker, same weight as the one I just picked up. The villager BAS is really what I was looking for, but I am very happy with the polished now that I have it in my greedy little hands.:D

Yes, pleasantly surprised with the sharper polished blades, I'm not touching this Bura BAS until I really need to. That Malla is indeed a keeper. Looks like a good sized handle.

Can't wait to see the finished product, I'm sure you will post in time. Going all the way with the BAS this weekend:D
