blade length blahs

I am now forward deployed to Japan, only for a short while, but here none the less. The national laws here only permit knives with a blade length of 2.5 inches or less. I have been scouring spyderco.com for a suitable replacement for my military which I have had on me for a few years now, and I am hard pressed to make a decision on which knife to look into buying. So far, besides the keychain knives, I have only found a few that have blades of less than 2.5 inches, namely the Dodo and the Dragonfly. I know there is quite a bit of talk here about the Dodo, and I am leaning in the direction, but I would have to order it from the states and the mail is slow. I can get a dragonfly here, but I want to make the best decision possible. SO I guess I am looking for opinions or suggestions from my fellow forumites as to what to do.

Domo in advance,

Garrett

I have a Dragonfly and will vouch for its effectiveness as a cutter. Despite its small size the ergos are quite good -- it's possible to get a good grip on the handle. I also got mine because of a blade-length limit, in my case in the building where I work.

I don't own a Dodo but I've handled one. The full-size G-10 handle offers a better grip than the Dragonfly, exactly as you'd expect. I may be alone here but I found the ball bearing lock difficult to operate (I found it slippery), but that was only with a few moments to try it. Maybe it becomes easier with practice.

I would lean towards the Dodo, personally. It's a unique style, love or hate. I wasn't sure until I carried it, and I just can't find a reason to not carry it now. It's an excellent and versatile cutter, I just can't brag enough about its large knife performance. I have the PE version, and I'm VERY PLEASED with it.

FYI shipping to an APO is MUCH FASTER using USPS Priority Mail. My Brother is stationed @ Kadena, and it's still a 2-3 week shipping using priority mail, but much faster that 2-3 months for standard mail.

Good luck!

the 10-year old dragonfly i had as EDC for years has stood up to unmentionable abuses. i'd have no doubts about it. the dodo is very cool, though..

I EDC a Military too.If I had to go to one that small it would be a SS or CF Dragonfly, maybe a Navigator.
