I have owned a pocket knife ever since I was 8 years old and I have been taught the right way to use it and all. Now that I have gotten older I have bought bigger and better blades. My grandpa who is a veteran told me that it is legal to carry a knife on your person as long as the blade itslef wasnt bigger than your palm. Is this true or a load of bull?

i was told the same but depending on the officer's palm if you get a female officer her hands are obviously smaller. i havnt really gotten an exact answer from any cops ive asked some say i am not allowed to carry some say under 4 inch blade. by the way i live in new york

It depends VERY MUCH on where you live. There are no universal laws on this, and local ordinance tends to rule supreme.

Your state may or may not have a limit.

Your local area may or may not restrict it further.

i am aware of no state, county, or city that uses a palm rule for measurement.

who's palm? mine? yours? the judge's?

any length maximum will be listed specifically in the legal section, and varies from state to state, city to city.

again, never heard of a minimum blade length. many areas have maximum blade lengths.

San Antonio, Texas. All locking blades must be over 5.5 inches. State law prohibits anything over 5.5 inches. Tacky but apparently true. Only such place I've ever heard of. Jim Bowie has got to be rolling over in his grave. :p

strangest combination of requirements i have ever heard of.

The first question does not state location, but as for the first answer, in NYC there is a 4" limit, but no limit in the rest of NY State. The "palm" measurement is now and always has been BS.

Here in NJ, the maximum blade length is 3". I think it's illegal to carry a fixed blade of any length, which I am about to research further. If they aren't, I'm going to look into one of the smaller BRs for a new EDC.
