Hey all. As you know if you read my other posts, I have been searcing for a knife to use in tactical operations.

I am a new member of my department's SWAT team and need a knife that would be good for prying, cutting, light hammering and maybe some light chopping.

After several postings and some contact with some people via E-mail (Thanks Cliff and Eric), I have decided on the Ranger RD knife.

My only other question is should I get the RD6 with a blade length of 6 inches or the RD7 with a blade length of 7 1/2 inches and what are thier advantages and/or disadvantages?

Any opinions and suggestions would be appreciated...thanks! :)

Hey Rick...

I agree with tbg...

If you plan on mounting to your shroud, the less bulk the better..
Look at the picture I sent you of the shroud mounted Strider Solution..

This knife has a 4.5" blade and is 9.75" OAL, and it already hangs over the shroud quite a bit.. Much longer and it's going to become cumbersome. Something you probably don't want to do is overwhelm your sidearm..

Out of the two knives,, which are great knives BTW I would take the RD6 or smaller.

Think of this knife as a personal tool and not a breeching tool and you'll see that bigger isn't always better...

Eric...

You guys make a lot of sense. And here I was ready to play Rambo with a 7.5 inch blade. :D

I would also suggest the RD6.

I have both knives, and would suggest the RD7 for heavy work in the woods, but the RD6 will be plenty big enough to do any of the tasks you mentioned, and small enough to carry without getting in the way.

To answer your question, Ranger does not count the choil as "blade."

The RD 7 is 8" from forward end of handle slabs to point. It has 7" of sharpened blade.

All in all the RD 6 seems better for yuor situation, unless you want a knife that most would call an 8", the RD7.
