Got a Q about blade length. I am a newb here on the Busse forum but am an addict now. Not a Hog or even a pig yet but a piglett. In the last 2 weeks Ive added 5 Busse's. At first wanted somehing to EDC with a blade less than 5.5 (Texas law). Ordered a SAR4 SE (thanks Skunk) with black G-10. Couldnt stop there so now i have a new NMSFNO (thanks again Skunk), FFBM (thanks SS1945), BATAC (thanks GBM) and in the mail a snakeskin handled NMFBM (thanks Knifehunter). How do you get use out of a knife with a 11.5 inch length or even 10 or 8. Is is supposed to sit in the safe for life? Or is it....as long as you're not an idiot, you can use it for camping, hiking, hunting duties etc. I dont want any of my new Busses to be safe queens. I want to put them to work!

Thanks

Beat the hell out of them! That is what they are made for... Once you swing that mistress you will understand the addiction we all have here. ;)

Go chop some Cedar and Mesquite... even some dead oak. The mistress will laugh and mock you by shaving the hair off of your arm after the beating.

You'll do what any reasonable owner of an NMFBM will do... Run into your backyard screaming like a madman looking for a huge log of wood to start hacking away at, and baton it into skewers, start a massive bonfire, roast bacon over it while sweating, and make your wife question if she really made a good decision with you.

Wow. Talk about jumping in with both feet! Good on ya!

Trying to be a law abiding citizen. So does this mean the law doesnt care it your swingin 11 + inches of wild boar in your camp site or on the trail? As long as your not robbing the local 7-11 with it. The law is the law, and here in Texas it says 5 1/2 inches. I am a Concealed handgun permit holder, so i am kind of anal where the law is concerned. Oh...i just paid to become a gold member because thats the least i can due after receiving all the great info here in the Busse forum. It still says im a registered user. How long does it take???

Your Gold will activate by you in your user box IIRC.

Nice selection of knives you've chosen. They will all serve you well for various tasks. If you take some camping I don't see where that is EDC use, rather it's in a defined place and time. If you're in a public campground it's reasonable not to expect to wear any on your hip; because that would be considered 'carrying' by law IMO. If you use it in your camp, and secure it in a vehicle when not in use, then you should be good to go. +1 on the CCP!

Thanks, 1Tracker.

Yea, the last thing i'd do in a public campground is walk around with an 18 inch Hog hanging off my waist. I Try to stay away from the crowded campsgrounds, although thats not easy here in Texas, (am from New Mexico originally. Mainly primitive type stuff only me an my old CJ-7 can make it back into. But I have run into forrest rangers at the last places i'd expect to see them. I think common sense dictates here. Way deep in the sh!t, not being a douche, i dont think the law would think anythng of it.

My understanding is that as long as you can show you have a legitimate use, pretty much any legitimate use, you are golden. Pretty much anything associated with camping, hiking, hunting, etc. is a good enough reason for a >5.5" piece of steel. Of course, this will be hard to show in the middle of a city and my guess is your 'presentation' would matter also, ie an 8" NMSFNO while wearing a suit might not go over very well.

You might want to look at exactly how the law reads.
I've read from other Texans that the 5.5" law refers to daily carry, and does not apply if you're hunting, fishing or camping (meaning in the wilderness, not at the local KOA). Most states' laws in this regard are referring to daily use, not wilderness use.

Makes sense.
