blade length?

I'v been eyeing the benchmade 890. The only problem is, it has a 3.6" blade. My great state only allows 3.5" . Anyone in law enforcement? how likely am I to lose my knife, or worse? If searched?

Many of the Benchmade knives have listed blade lengths longer than what arrives in the box. They take into account all the exposed steel of the blade, not just what protrudes beyond the grip. So, if the back of the handle slopes back and leaves some steel for a thumb ramp, this gets added to the length. In the case of the 890 it might still be longer than 3.5, but probably very close. Soonerstate lists it at 3.375 (3 3/8) and I think they actually put a ruler to the knife for their listings.

Which state are you in?

I'm in colorado. Honestly I haven't been searched in years. I'v just always had a habbit of keeping it under 3.5. For some reason benchmade has alot of options, at 3.6 . Seems like benchmade measures from the longest point of the handle to the tip of the blade. Since the 890 is also assisted..... could make matters worse. ???

Are you sure its 3.5"? I can't imagine any cop giving you hell for a 3.6" knife when the limit is 3.5". Unless of course you are doing something illegal or run into a cop with a ruler and a bad day.

See if you can contact the DAs office in your state. Get a letter and/or e-mail stating clarification on the law.

It depends on what defines the "blade". If its a 3.5" sharp edge then you would be fine, if its measured from the edge of the handle to the tip then you might (stress might) have something to worry about. But getting a letter from a DAs office can hold up in court in NY, I would imagine the same in Colorado.

I gues I'll go ahead and get it . Like I said, I haven't had any run inns lately, and hey it's a "cutting tool" . thanks for the input.

Go for it, and you can always call knifecenter, Soonerstate or your vendor of choice and see if they'll put a ruler to the thing right from their stockroom. I imagine they'd be fine with that especially if it gets a sale.
