I have a Benchmade Osbourne Axis with 154cm steel blade and I was curious how many sharpenings this blade would take before I would need to replace it. I tried to sharpen it for the first time, which did not go as I expected, and I took about 1/2 a mm off of it. If I have to do this 3-4 times a year (which would be alot, since it stays sharp a long time even with frequent use) then would the blade last only 5 years or so?? Thanks for any advise.

It sounds like an excessive amount of steel to remove for one sharpening. Were there deep nicks or chips on the edge? If you need instruction, I would suggest you search sharpening threads on BF (there are several in the last few months). You should be able to sharpen a blade several times before you remove that much steel from the edge.

If you keep a consistant angle, try about 20° per side, a diamond hone will sharpen anything.

You sharpened away 1/2mm of blade steel????

Either you used a power grinder, which is the wrong thing to do, or you've got very strong arms.

Sharpening normally removes well under 1/1000th of an inch, maybe about 5-10um.

BTW, welcome to Bladeforums, Mr. Randaximus. So, according to your profile, you are a project manager in Iraq. That must be very interesting work right now. I'm glad to see that you've got internet access. We'll look forward to your posts here.

I agree, please let us know about the day to day there. Oh yea! WELCOME! Paul
