Blade Magazine Cover Knife by Wilson; Rate it

Was that the 1911 grip knife?

I don't personally care for it, but that's just aesthetics.
It may be a perfectly fine knife.

It doesn't appear comfortable to use. I could be wrong. I imagine gun owners appreciate it due to the similarity of the handle scales to that of a pistol.

The 1911 Colt is one of my favorite handguns. The Wilson knife looks awful. And, while the stocks on the 1911 are good for a autoloading pistol, I can't imagine them being anything but miserable for a knife.

I handled one at Blade, and my first thought was that the handle needs to be reversed. It has a large circumference where your fingers are shortest, tapering to a small circumference where your fingers are longest. It is certainly a workable, useable design, just not an optimum one, IMO.

the handles should have a mor ergonomic shape, IMO. A knife isnt a gun so why have a gun grip on a knife? Seems like a novelty item.

If you've held a 1911, you'd know why they would work great on knives. It's very ergonomic. However, the Wilson knives have a slightly different profile than the 1911, it just happens to be close enough to use 1911 grips. They work well in this application - much better than those tubes that pass for handles on CRK knives ;)

I'm vaguely familiar with the 1911 and its ergonomics.
Still, I'm not sold on the idea of a knife grip approximating its look/feel.
To restate, I haven't held the knife in question, I'm just going on what little I know of the 1911 and what I've seen of the knife in pictures.

That said, WYK does have a point about the tubular handles of the CRK one-piece design. It's a bad design. That's why no reputable knife company would use it.

I suspect the tubular handle might be more of a side-effect of the "hollow handle design" and less of a statement about its ergonomic properties.

Personally, I would take Wilson's Model1 over the 1911 design, but given it's a regular model for them, there must be more than a few people who disagree with me.

Well, the ergonomics you can determine for yourself. It's a tactical knife - or it's supposed to be. The steel is 3/16th thick, the grips are 1/4" thick at it's middle. So that makes it nearly 3/4" thick by about an inch and a half wide. That should fill the hand well enough for most tactical uses. I see it as more of a thick Strider than a thin CRK. ;)
I, personally, believe knives and 1911's go hand in hand...

Al Mar Used it...............

I picked the knife in question up a few times and was rather surprised at how well it felt in the hand.

That being said, I don't care for the looks of it but that is a matter of personal taste. My 1st thoughts on it were "gimmick" and it still is to some degree but It's not as bad a knife as one would assume.

I was being ironic.
All 3 of the makers I listed make or made tubular handled survival/fighting knives.
I'd fogotten about that big beauty of Al Mar's or I would have listed him too.

Evil Steel,

Ultimately, if something about the design speaks to you then you should find a way to handle one and make an informed decision for yourself. Wilson Tactical makes some nice knives.
