I'm new to the forum. I'm trying to find the best material for a blade. What knife manufacture is the best to go with?

That is a mighty broad question. Suggest you will get a more informative response if you include particulars like what your use will be, carry methods preferred, cost range and blade length. Folder or fixed blade?

I will put forward my own bias, which is that I generally prefer folders that use thumbholes or thumbdisks rather than thumbstuds. There are exceptions however.

Your question leaves a lot of room for debate. As for steel, it really matters how a maker handles it. Your best bet would be to hang around the Forum for a bit, and look, listen, and learn. Also, what style of knife are you looking for? Traditional or modern, folder or fixed?

Hope that helps :) !!!

Sorry, I'm looking for a fixed blade hunting knife. This knife would be used to skin game of all kind. The cost would be a max. of $150.
I want a knife that will keep an edge. I hope this is enough
information to answer my question.

Thanks again!!

Answer a few more questions and you should get some good responses:

Stainless or carbon steel preference?
Preference between stock removal and forged blades?
About what blade length? 3-4", or do you want a 4-6" blade for say Elk?
Preference for hollow or flat ground?
Will you pry and chop with knife, or is this strictly a slicer?
Preference between straight back hunter, drop point, semi-skinner, clip point, or perhaps an upswept skinner type blade?
Preference in sheaths?... leather? Kydex? Don't care?
