Blade Movement On Lockbacks

Hello All,

I just wanted some feedback on this topic. I have a number of Spyderco lockbacks (Chinook, Blackhawk, Calypsos, Navigator, ..). Many of them have a slight amount of movement when locked. In the case of the Chinook and Blackhawk (they have pivot screws, some don't as you know), I can tighten the screw to the point where it almost goes away, but then it is really too tight. Does anyone have insight on what causes this or how to resolve it?

I could bring it to Spyderco CS, but then we are talking about a number of pieces, some being discontinued.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Bob. There is almost always a tiny bit of play in our lockbacks. It should not present any problems in performance.

I can say that our lockbacks ar among the strongest in the world.

Guess I've been lucky (or I'm not trying hard enough). I'm sitting here with my blue Delica, and I can't detect any blade play when it's locked. And I know I've never noticed any with my G10 Navigator, Calypso Jr. lightweight, CF Dragonfly, or white Micarta baby Horn.

Just checked the Ladybug II on my keychain; it's solid as a rock, too.

Bob, just curious, what are you doing when you notice the blade play, and is it horizontal or vertical?

I like and own a few Spydercos, but my Endura had a little more movement than I liked in a knife.I sent it in,it was checked out and returned to me with the note that it was within specks. It was also cleaned and sharpend, nice.Still it was not to my specks and I sold it to a friend,he carries it on the job as an arson investigator and likes it fine.

I have the following FRN knives.
1. Endura
2. Native
3. Dragonfly
4. Blue Delica
None of them have any play closed or opened, and the Endura has been through the mill! If they did, after what Sal said I wouldn't be concerned, unless it got really serious! RKBA!

Bob,
The small bit of play under load (in cutting direction) is in all back lock nature.
Here I tried to explain this issue. The SPYDERCO back locks have this play on very minimal level comparing with overage due to very high manufacturing accuracy.

BTW, the links in original post probably will not work, please connect the http://www.guns-world.net and then search their Knife section if want to see entire review. Or try this link.

Sergiusz' link is making me paranoid. No matter how many times I go there, I see a comparison between the Gerber Yari and the BM Nimravus Cub, and a review of a Katz or Delta Z knife. Has anyone been patient enough to read one or both to see if he does discuss the typical blade play of backlocks?

Wow! That's really a great explanation. I think I totally understand what's happening now. Thanks, Sergiusz!

Sergiusz explains it beautifully. I had been wondering if I had a "bad" Native since it has, I'll call it "hyper extending," play. I love the Native, but it realy moves when a load is applied to the edge.

I find some of my lock backs have some play when applying cutting pressure and others have no play. For ex., I own 4 Delicas (3 FRN, 1 SS), and 2 of the FRN ones have a little play. Also 3 Enduras, 2 have a little play when cutting, one has zero play. So I also feel it can depend on the individual knife's fit, that there will be variation.

Maybe I'm just lucky. Blade "wiggle" drives me crazy though.
Currently I own: 1)Toad
2)Delica
3)Both carbon fiber and
4)Zytel Dragonflys
5)Zytel Cricket
There is NO "wiggle" in any of them. My favorite Spyderco of all is the little Toad. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it and that has not changed.
