I don't know if any of you read this series, but a weapon that looks damn interesting keeps showing up in the form of this sickle like axe of the main villain. I was just wondering if anyone knew of someone capable of producing such a piece. If you are a reader and know exactly what I am talking about, how many edges of the axe do you think are actually sharpened.

LOL. I can safely say I was not expecting these responses, but am pleasantly surprised. There were two versions of this made for the comic story and the animated series of it. One had just a sharpened sickle edge and the other had all edges sharpened but the top. The way it is presented in both versions is...well...for lack of a better word...BADASS! If I ever see a real combat ready version of this, I will pay pretty much anything to get it. Hell, I may have to sell an organ if someone could make the matching sword for it at the bottom.

I think only the sickle side is sharpened. Anotsu was practicing in the forest when Rin was watching and during that time, ends a series of movements by bringing the axe down on his leg. I'm guessing it's not sharp there.

I also think it'd be a waste to sharpen it in more than that one side. He comments that the katana is one of the greatest edged weapon, but that he chooses to use this axe because even if someone spies his technique, his axe would crush the sword that comes to block it, and the skull hiding behind it. Sharpening it would make the axe weaker and lose a bit of weight that would come in handy for crushing.

Yea, I'm a fan. Find pictures of the other weapons too. I bet this forum would get a kick out of Manji's many weapons. The designs are very interesting.

The description above says that it's "blunt"... so I am assuming it isn't sharpened at all and is more or less a bludgeoning instrument.

Well, probably mostly blunt. He splits falling leaves with that axe, so while it may not all be sharpened, I'm guessing one of the edges is.

That would make sense I guess... I have never read any of it though I have a few friends that highly recommend it. Just read the wiki page on it and it sounds very interesting.

It's very well done, but like most long running series, the plot picks up a lot of stray characters and odd wanderings. Still, very interesting.

I wonder what kind of fighting style would be best for handling it. I can imagine it would make quite a mess. Is it just me or does anyone else want to see cold steel to a test video with it. I bet it would go right through the cow skull and through the thing it is attached to.

I'd love to see that. Anotsu doesn't really put that axe through its paces and it'd be wicked to see stuff go flying.

I'm pretty much a traditional hawk kinda guy but I like that thing a Lot.
What kind of length is this thing in the comic?
I'd like to make one out of wood with a spike, much like an Iroquois head cracker.

I'd say 3/4th's of a katana. Not that it's any kind of measurement, but Rin (a slight Japanese girl) gets a hold of it and can barely lift it.

If you want to read though it...

Here is him practicing (starting here and continuing through the next chapter):

Thanks DK
I may just make one of those (out of wood, Steve can forge one ))) when I get a day or two break from making sheaths. Thanks for the toons ;-)

I was just thinking to myself, I'd seen an etching once a long time ago as a kid of a wooden club with a bone spike fashioned in a similar shape. (rounded top end that spiked in the wood to meet the bone perfectly. I wish I knew what the name of the etching was and where in the hell to find it.)

I may have to use my wood-crafting skills to come up with a primitive execution of this design...

Looking at the pictures, I'd say it may be a little short of a katana's standard length, but slightly longer than a wakizashi. Rough estimate, around 24-25". Seems like a good length for swift but powerful movements. Weight the back end slightly and it could be quite the melee weapon (or home-renovator)

I definitely have to say I love the concept of this axe. I mean really it is a sickle axe mixed with a club. It looks like it could pull double duty pretty well as both. The only drawback to it that I can see is that it appears to be one solid forged piece with a little leather wrapped around the handle. Seems like weight would be quite a consideration.
