Blade on new CQC-7BW seems...small?

Hey folks!

I've had a few Emersons before but I've never gotten around to owning a CQC-7 before(or even seeing one in person), so last week I finally gave in and dropped the cash on a new CQC-7BW.

The knife showed up Monday and so far it is great, but one little thing is bugging me about it. Maybe I am crazy but the profile of the blade seems...svelte-r, I guess, than I was expecting it to be. In all the pictures I've seen, it looks like this wide slab of tanto that matches up in width to the chunky handle. On mine it seems to be really dwarfed by the dimensions of the handle, and comes to a thinner tip than I would have expected. At first I was worried I had been mistakenly shipped a mini, but the blade clearly says CQC-7BW and I measured it out right at the stated 3.3" of the full-size model.

Is this just an optical illusion common to the CQC-7 or something, or is mine different from the norm? Any other CQC-7 owners notice something like this once seeing the knife in person? Am I just nuts? It's not really a problem, just a thought stuck in my head and hearing from some others would go a long way.

That's the way they are. It's a little deceiving because of the tanto blade shape. Use it. You'll enjoy it!

Looks normal to me. The handle to blade ratio is a little different on the 7 than other knives.

I think it just looks smaller because of the black coating. If you happen to get a hold of a satin version it looks bigger because of the reflection off the surface. I thought the same thing when I got my patriot. I have one in black and one in satin and I thought I got a bigger blade in the satin but I think it's just the way the light comes off

Older models (1999-2001 or so) had a different grind profile than the current ones do. In addition, the tanto edge of the blade on the older ones was not as pointed as the current ones either. It has a little to do with the black coating as well, but the blade shapes have changed very slightly over the years.

The spine drops fairly drastically into the point, compared to other tantos which are more or less straight across. That might play into it.

The 7's have a greater handle:blade ratio than most knives. For me it's advantageous as I have big hands, often cut with gloves (outdoor....winter) and appreciate the ability to choke back on the handle and gain extra blade length. It's perfectly normal and that is probably where the illusion is coming from. I think Ground0, who mentioned the black coating, may be onto something too. I hear black is 'thinning.' I know on my Super 7 the blade looks/feels pretty massive for 3.75".

A few people here have commented on the 'look' of it, with that longer handle, but I'm sure they haven't handled one much or they'd realize what great handles they really are in use. No hot spots, no cramping and comfortable margins of back and forth on the handle.

The Super 7 is where all this is most apparent, but I love mine. Never have I considered the Super 7 b-blade to be small though. Mine, in satin and plain edge seems pretty massive when held. Emerson calls it a pocket broadsword and I tend to agree. Only other folder I own that feels more massive is my Ti-Lite VI and it IS a sword.

I'm very comfortable with the Super 7 and like it a lot. It's in my pocket right now.

Yours looks perfect to me. In the pic I think I may see how the black blade may look a bit less massive. It's illusion though.

Yeah, a good example/comparison would be the CS Recon series tantos vs. the Emerson design. IMO the Emerson has the classier grind....which it should at twice the price.
