I got very nervous until we got all the slag and rust off the blades and started hitting good solid blade. Underneath all that nasty stuff is a typical HI blade -- near 60 Rc and perfectly done. The blades checked belonged to Yvsa and I did not want to cut into them too much -- not mine to cut -- but he took my filing down to where it should be and found what we both wanted. I am relieved.

Uncle Bill, I would like to order an 18" AK, Chiruwa style blade. How much will it cost?

I would sure hate to tackle one of these without some sort of power equipement. It's almost impossible to file work a 60-61 Rc blade. It could be done with one of the cheap carburandum stones, but would take an awful lot of work.
OTOH I think everyone could benefit by ordering one of these blades just to see the amount of completion the kamis take the forged blade too!!!
They are Fantastic!

Uncle, do you still have my order?

"The median family of four...paid $4,722 in federal taxes last year. That's enough to pay for a new curtain for the secretary of commerce's office, to bribe a farmer not to plant 38 acres with corn...seven weeks of salary for a Customs man assigned to save us from the terror of high-quality, low priced foreign TV sets, or the subsidy on 6,000 bushels of wheat to prop up the Soviet regime. Surely civilization would collapse without such essential services."

Bill. Is it possible to get a blade only karda and chamka as well? If so how much extra would they be (say about 6in each)?

I am going to keep this blade only deal just that. If you start adding add ons here is how it goes.

First it will be karda and chakma -- then a bolster -- pretty soon a buttcap -- how about the keeper for the buttcap -- can you add in the five little tools. What about sending the wood and leather so I can assemple the scabbard. I've already been asked for some laha which I got and sent at no charge so I better stop now before we even get started and get in too deep.

Sorry, but there is only one of me.

Amen Uncle,
Keep it simple, if you want to try to do one of these, you are responsible for the pieces/parts!!! The Kamis do the hard part, we should be able to find the miscellaneous hardware necessary to put them together. This does look to be a major undertaking, but one that will be very rewarding in the end. (We all like working for ourselves for 10 cents an hour don't we???)

You're right Bro. I still think everyone that's interested in the Kami's talent should have a plain blade whether or not they choose to finish it.

A cheap carbarundum stone with a coarse and fine side and some elbow grease could put a very good edge on a blade with some elbow grease.
Anyone with the patience could finish a flat blade like the Chainpuri to a pretty nice condition using just that.

As far as the bolsters and such, a flat 1/8" piece of brass and a piece of buffalo bone makes a very nice bolster. If you don't believe it, just ask Bill.

The butt cap can be made out of the same material.
That's what I am gonna use on my blades.

Bro you're right about me being the perfectionist although I can be satisfied with less than perfect.
And Sometimes perfect is in the eye of the one considering what beauty is.

And here I sit looking at one of the most beautiful khukuri blades I have ever seen and it isn't even quite ready for a handle yet.
smile.gif

Everyone probaly knows that I can't keep my hands off of a new blade even if it isn't a completed khukuri. I believe it's that HIKV thing.

Anyway I have filed some more on the blade and was wishing I had of gotten some 220 grit Silicon Carbide paper yesterday. I went digging in Pen's shed and found one of those cheap stones I was talking about.
I used it on the sides of the blade to bring out the Highlights
of the Hammer Dingy finish and ran it down the edge a bit as well.
Now if I had some kerosene or diesel fuel to work the stone with I would have an edge on it in short order!!! It isn't gonna be as hard to do as I 1st thought due to the thinness of the forged edge.
The stone not being mine I won't use it the same way I would if it was.

I am ready to go home now and work on this khukuri. Obligations be dayumed for a while. The forumites need to see this blade to completion soon.

I am gonna change one thing if possible. The cho looks as if it is possible to make a bleeding heart from it as in the old 'Hawk style and I am probably gonna make it one to add my personal flair to the blade.
All that's left to do on the blade itself is polishing and an edge.
I have always loved the silver and black colors of a blade like this one.
Finish is like beauty. It's in what the eye sees and I believe everyone here will be able to see the beauty in this khukuri.

Dayum, I love this knife!!!!
When I get started on the Hanuman I am sure I will feel the same way about it as well. What's not to love about HI Khukuri's?!?!?

Khukuri FAQ

One day I was renting some equipment and noticed some square fist sized blocks on the ground. It turned out that they were worn carburundum blocks used in the polishing machines for terazzo floors! Mine was free. "Free" is ten or twelve of my favorite words.

I use it to put a fast edge on my planes and my chisels if they get dinged. It cuts fast and does it dry.

So, lads, off to the rent-all store and start asking! Uncle Bill, maybe your kamis could use one of them apiece, they last forever.
