BLADE PLAY- VERTICAL

Both my Pocket Hobbit and Carnivore have a little bit of vertical play in the blade when locked, The PH is quite bad. However they wont unlock with pressure applied to the blade spine. It is just a little bit disconcerting. These are great knives and other than this minor problem I can't fault them. I have tried taking Bob's advice and flicking them open quite forcefully, but this hasn't corrected anything. Maybe the spring in the lock is a little weak and doesn't force the rolling lock forcefully enough into the locked position. The springs seem quite firm and strong but I can't see anything else that would cause this problem. The rolling lock engages the blade tang perfectly and everything fits together well. If anyone has a solution to this problem I'd appreciate their replies. I'm very hesitant to send the knives back to the States for repairs as I had to wait quite a while to get then through Customs here in Australia and don't want to go through that again if I can help it.

Peter,

I just recieved a pioneer II left a post here at the forum concerning the clip which is really no big deal. Overall the knife seemed to be a great product until! I noticed the verticle play also, in this knife. from other post I saw recommendations of cycling the blade to help seat the lock. Well I don't think that seating a shear pin in a groove is the problem. On my knife I put a 10X magnifier up to the blade to look at the grind when I first recieved it last thursday I also looked at the contact point where the blade hits the stop bushing when fully opened. for me it looks as if their is deformation happening on the stop bushing thus changing the demension of the locking triangle causing play to develop.
I also noticed pitting on the stop bushing surface. I slipped a very small sliver of notebook paper between the stop bushing and slowly opened the blade. The verticle play diappeared, Coincedence? I then removed the little sliver of notebook paper and opened the blade, Verticle play! certainly this is not a very technical way of determining the cause but, it's enough for me to send the Knife back.

I really like this knife so I will be sending it back to R.E.K.A.T hopfully they will have a fix for it

I have two REKAT's and the vertical play is VERY evident in both. I have written to REKAT and posted the problem here and as yet I have had no replies whatsoever. I am dissappointed to say the least. The slop in the rolling lock appeared after only a month or so and from my observations It's a problem inherent in the design. There seems to be no way to stop the rolling lock backing it's way out of the notch in the tang. I haven't got them to unlock but the amount of vertical play is very disconcerting.

I too have posted here regarding vertical blade play in my Carnivour. As with yours, this did not occur until after about 3 weeks. I also love mine and do not want to send it back, however I do want a solution to this problem. I have received no response to my posting, so I hope that this one generates some feedback. If this flaw is inherent in the rolling lock design, then I'd really like this to be made clear to me.

Sorry I have been playing hooky here, other commitments, now dashing to the sour apple for the NY Knife Show.
Peter I sent you an email and it bounced resend me one with your address again I just went through a hard drive transplant.
With out looking I can’t give you a definitive answerer on the blade play but it is not normal. Many of the repairs are due to customers trying to improve on the knife DO Not Dremmel the radius. We have tried to avoid the policy of customer’s opening the knives and doing their own modifications to void any warranty but it looks eminent.
And no it’s not an inherent fault in the Rolling Lock. I have yet to see any manufacture in any product that has 100% perfection we try to QC we are running about a 1% to 2% oops factor. That falls into the manure happens category. We have been very responsive to any defects and will continue to repair or replace any manufactured defect. With obvious customer tampering we will do it with the shipping cost and replacement parts
