I have a recon 1 and it now has up and down blade play not a lot but some. Does anyone know how to fix that? It still has no side to side play tho, after tightening the pivot. Thanks for any advice.

I do not think you can fix it other than sending it in but i dont know for sure. Does it just wiggle or is there considerable movement?

I thought you couldn't, and it just wiggles. It wiggles more when you try seeing if has blade play at the tip than the bottom of the blade. Nothing serious but just wondering.

The machining may need to be smoothed out a touch in the tang, and the lock back. If the lock back is not fully plunging in, you will get a touch of up and down play.

Yeah, or if you have some fine gun-smithing stones, you could gently work it to smooth out the machine marks

the lock bar on the recon 1 is supposed to be self adjusting. I have had numerous recon 1's come through my hands and if they had blade play... all the needed some some cleaning. Hit the entire thing with some brake clean or something to dislodge whatever is interrupting the lock bar. Then lube it back up. Try just pushing hard on the lock bar where your thumb would rest on the gimping and then try seeing if there is blade play while applying pressure. I have had mine for years now and not a hint of blade play on them or any that I have had or modded and they have been used heavily. Cleaning SHOULD fix it.

I clean it and everything thoroughly and oiled it up. It still has no side to side but some up and down play. I haven't done anything extreme like batoning or anything. Also the blade has a weird random lump at the beginning Of the grind closest to the handle, only on one side. I don't know if I got a bad one or what but it just dont seem to be as tough as other people's.

I was gonna give the same advice as fly, since bits of pocket lint and such can get down in there in the Tri-Ad and sometimes cause a wee bit o' up-and-down play, but since you've already tried that, I'd send it in for warranty work. CALL (not email) Cold Steel customer service at the number on their site.

Yah, the only way that it should have play is if the lock bar is not engaging. I watched a guy completely strip down an AK furniture and all then put on new furniture with nothing but his Recon 1. Seriously torquing the crap out of the knife and still, zero play.... But if you look at models were people have used and abused them for a while the lock bar is seated further down than it would be on a new one. The lock has just adjusted its self.

so once again, if its got play the lock bar is not seating correctly.

So should I send it to Cold Steel or use it some more for the lock to set in?

It's VERY unusual to see any play in a Recon I. I would suggest sending it in to us (with a covering note explaining the situation) at the following address:
COLD STEEL, INC.
6060 NICOLLE STREET
VENTURA, CA 93003
UNITED STATES

Thanks
