Blade Play.

My Goddard lightwieght, of about one and a half months, has developed a slight bit blade play (up and down play). However I am afraid that it will only get worst with time. Should I be worried, or is this normal wear, I haven't used the knife for anything more than cutting paper, opening envelopes, shaving armhair.

Thanks, Poniard

I have several spydercos that have received reasonably heavy use over a long period of time. My oldest is 7 years old. None have developed any blade play what so ever. I do open them fairly carefully and never flick them at all. Based on my experience it seems as if your knife shows abnormal wear.

Thank you for the reply bansidthe. I am going to send the knife in and see if this situation can be rectified.

I bought a Delica (plainedge) from A.G. Russell, here in Springdale, and took it back (after four months) because it, too, developed blade play. I then ended up taking that one back two months later! (same problem) They swapped it again, and that one is still going strong a year later. I think that ones like that slip through occasionally. My guess is the machine that presses the rivets together on the blade pivot gets out of adjustment (maybe?) sometimes and just doesn't press them together tight enough. Send it back to Spyderco Customer Service and I'm sure that they will take care of you.

Flinx,
I will send the knife in Monday morning and hopefully all will go as planned. Do you have any idea how long I can expect to wait on the knife. Since this is the first time I have had to deal with Spyderco customer service.

Poniard, call them first. That's what I did when I had a problem with my Native. They were very helpful and promised to keep an eye out for my knife. My Native was a special case (problem with the batch of steel, the old Gin-1, not the new 440V) so they wanted to run some tests on it to see what had happened. But, in about three weeks, they sent me my new Native with a letter explaining what they had found with the original one. Now that is what I call service! From what I have read here on the forums, some companies just send the knife back, no explanation at all. Sometimes repaired, sometimes not. Of course, being impatient, I would have like to have received the knife back sooner (you know, have the new one in my hand five minutes after I mailed off the old one

), but I'm very pleased that Spyderco actually took the time to find out what the problem was with the knife and take steps to improve so it wouldn't happen again. That's just one of the reasons why I stick with Spyderco. Like I said before, I know they will take good care of you and your knife.
