Blade play

Hey guys! I posted a little while back about a blurple pm2 I received and was worried about if it was legit and turned out it was. I adjusted the pivot because it was kinda stiff and loctited it. But now I realized it had a little bit of side to side blade play.

I then spent more than an hour tuning in the pivot screws and stop pin screws but still a slight amount of play. Then I cranked down all four screws so tight the blade could hardly move but it was still there. I don't really notice it because I have to use quite a bit of force to wiggle it. All I want to know is if it could be that the compression lock will after wearing in maybe reduce this and if it has any functional downside? I can live with it if it doesn't affect the function of the knife.

Thanks in advance

I can't speak for your knife, but I know with nearly all of my folders they some very slight side to side play if I push hard enough. If it moves side to side down by the tang area, I'd be concerned. But if you're pushing towards the tip and the blade moves ever so slightly I wouldn't be too worried about it.

As for functionality, it shouldn't cause any issues as long as it's as I described above, in my experience at least.

Most folders you can cause some side to side flex in the blade if you muscle it. There is a difference between flex in the system vs blade play.

Yeah that actually does sound like play and not flex. While I'm positive it won't greatly affect the functionality of the knife overall, I personally wouldn't like it.

I am obsessive as well lol. If you cant get it right send it in my man. Spyderco will help you out. I recommend fondling as much as necessary before sending it off. Shouldn't take too long to come back. Then you can obsessively track it! haha

Thanks for advise! Yeah I am very obsessive. But I live in South Africa so sending in is a lot of fuss. Not to mention shipping costs haha. That's why I kinda have to either live with it or try sending it back or buying another one..

My PM2 has a bit of side-to-side when adjusted to the action of my liking.
Use that sucker. I regretted purchasing a PM2 untill I really started using it. The harder I use it, the more I like it.

Most of my knives have a bit of side to side play. Cold Steel knives with the Tri-ad lock are completely solid and all of mine have zero play.

Most of my Spydercos have a bit of play.

I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like an issue. A little flex, or wiggle, isn't a big deal. It's a folder after all and a sub $200 knife.

Just relax and enjoy it, the PM2 is a fantastic knife. I'm sure yours is fine.

If the washers have been polished, and done so more than needed, that can cause side to side blade play that is difficult to get rid of.

I occasionally get a Spyderco with a bit of side to side blade play . These are the ones that fall shut when the lock is released. Some people equate that to smoothness of action. I call it a loose pivot. When I tighten the pivot screw the side to side wiggle goes away and I can still flick the blade. I have no Spydercos with side to side play.
I did receive one sprint PM2 with 20cv steel that had side to side play that couldn t be corrected by tightening the pivot screw. I returned it to Spyderco for correction. They sent it back asking tha I call. Upon calling the service department I was told the small amount of play couldn t be eliminated. I was assured that functionally, it was fine. It was then that I learned, probably through this forum, that tightening the screws on each side of the stop pin would eliminate side to side wiggle. With that partcular knife, I had to tighten the screws extremely tight to get rid of the wiggle. The pivot stll worked smoothly.
I like the knife much better now that the side to side play is gone. Don t settle for that play.
