Blade Play

I have an 07 cqc 15, with very little use, still quite tight when opeing the blade, but it has a fair amout of side to side blade play when in the open and or closed position. How much paly is normal. If I lightly tap the side of the knife while it is closed the blade will hit the liner and make a clack sound. When the knife is open there is a good .008-.010 side play if not more. I would have thought that it would have been much tighter. It almost seems as if the blade pin is too small for the hole in the blade.

If I tighten it up much more than it is it will not wave properly and wants to eat my pants pocket. I figure that tightening it up is really the only wat to elimitnate the play though. I may have to remove the 'disc' to make it easier to wave with less pant damage.

it may not be assembled properly.

if there is that much blade play, and the pivot is tight, then the pivot may not be set properly or the washers may be on the same side.

try taking it apart and cleaning all the parts. apply a little oil to the washers, then reassemble. make sure both washers are not on the same side of the blade, and that the pivot screw is properly aligned. there should be an even amount of space between the both scales and the blade. if the pivot is offset, it should be obvious, and this could be the source of the problem.

Id say a small amount of blade play is normal. all my EKIs have "play" of some sort but as long as it isnt enough to perhaps disengage the lock and the blades not rattling around then is probably fine.

I'll try that and see what happens, it looks like its properly assembled but, ya n3ever know untill you get a good look at it.

Much better if you could use something like Militec wherein it dries up, so that it won't be a lint and fabric magnet.

Hornady OneShot dry lube is what i have laying aroung, I'll try that.

UPDATE: I fully disassembled, cleaned, relubed, and reassembled and set the tension and 'blue' loctited it. So far so good. What kind of grease does emerson use, that stuff is as tacky as molasses. I used a dry lube per recomendation, now the blade is extremely stiff when trying to open it manually, but it will not open using an inertia test to defeat the detent balls:p. I have yet tried to wave it but I may still have to remove the disc so it doesn't eat the corner of my pocket out when the tension is this tight OR I may just remove the disc and chuck it up and take some compund to it and remove the knurling and smoot it out so its still there to assist in opening but does not have the ability to bite in to the pocket fabric.

with my emersons, i like to find the sweet spot with the pivot. ie minimal or no blade play, and smooth fast opening. that is where i loctite the pivot.

are you still getting lateral play?

Hmm, so you guy's buy these knives so that you can work on them??? Seems like these knives should be Right from the Factory or are they are defective blems??

no.

he was given advice on how to correct a problem he was experiencing. i have no idea about the condition, if it was used, or from the factory.

thx for the useless post.

When I got my first Emerson (a model 15 as well), I started working on my wave practicing. I loosened the screw to the point where it waved great - but I also started getting a bit of "clack". I consider that user error.

It took about 5 minutes of trial and error before I found that sweet spot. It's a great knife - no regrets...

Your new Emerson's will have a long break in period more so for the satin/ceramic coated blades. I never had a problem with the black finish but I have noticed the factory grease makes them get real stiff after a while. My commander has the satin finish and to help speed up break in I polished the blade where the washers sit, It has been 5 years and still smooth like butter.

P.S. blue lube

No lateral play as of now, just a bit stiff, but thats to be expected.

thanks for the advice

dont know about the others but i dont, never have had an EKI which needed work from the factory, though i'm sure there are some out there (as with any brand no one is 100%)

I would venture to say that to most people they would have never noticed teh lateral play in normal use unless they are extremely attentive and meticulus like I am and many of us knife 'nuts'.

As a side note I remove the knurling on the disc and polished it up nicely, it makes it much easier to wave and still be easy to open by hand while reducing the amount of damage to the pocket 'lip' from waving it. while adding a bit of flare or contrast to the all black knife, not to mention it looks factory.;)

New from the factory, I can not recall any time that I bought anything new whether it was a car a gun or a knife that I did not have to rework or fix something, I've just come to expect it.

Spidy---You are correct. Especially if you have the Eye for perfection. The Hartsfield's were the first knives where I could not find one mistake. Those knives were bought back in the eighties, so don't jump on me. Spyderco has been overall, very good, though!
