Blade Polishing. How does case do it?

I was wondering how Case is able to achieve the level of polish on their knives in a production enviroment? I have been told the blades are tumbeled. If that is the case my next question is what type of media is used and would it be practical for makers who are behind on orders to do the same?

Regards,

Tom Carey

I've wondered the same thing, but about SAKs. They manage to polish ever implement and still keep the price low. When a high-end production knife company polishes their blades--for example, microtech--they charge a lot more than a satin finished one.

Bulk polishing is usually done by automatic rotary machines where the parts are fixed in a jig and are mounted on a carosel with a number of polishing heads mounted around it and the jig in presented to the heads in turn to result in a finished product.

Smaller parts are often vibra finished in a vibrating tub filled with varying abrasive media ending up with corncob/buffing compound combination. The process is very slow but the advantage is that it doesnt require a person to be around during the cycle and large loads are possible.
