Blade Preference

I have always favored satin finish , plain edge blades. Just my personal preference for the tasks I usually use my knives for. But lately I've been looking at some partially serrated blades that look nice and even some black coated blades that have been catching my eye. So I think I may broaden my horizons and make my next new EDC a partially serrated blade or a black coated blade.

The Spyderco Manix2 in particular looks great with the partially serrated blade. And the all-black Manix2 with the DLC coated blade looks nothing short of sinister (I like !!!).

So what is your EDC blade preference and why ?

I prefer plain finished blades with no serrations for general use. I have fully serrated folders that I seldom use and have found that I have little use for serrations outside the kitchen in my life.

Almost all of my knives are satin, plain edge. I fave a couple that I bought used w/ black coatings, both benchmade. I don't mind the black but the benchmade coating is not very durable, I have heard that the spyderco coating is better.

I have a couple of partially serrated blades but very much prefer plain edge. There are a few things that are easier to cut with serrations but for what I cut PE is better.

It's really fun to carry a well done DLC blade like the 0200 or Manix 2 XL, but in the end a satin or stonewashed knife is less obtrusive visually, and for some reason I'm not as hesitant to use it as I am the DLC. Some people find themselves admiring the coating for much, they don't want to mess it up.

My preference in a daily carry folder is a larger wide satin blade spear point of heavy duty construction. My favorite daily carry since Blade 2011 has been a Lion Steel SR1. Luckily, living in Alabama there is no problem carrying this type of knife. This is my left pocket knife. (I am left handed.) My right pocket knife is a half-serrated Spyderco Native.

I recently got a Benchmade Presidio with black finish and partially serrated. I actually prefer the plain edge, but I got this for a ridiculous price on ebay. It was listed as a Griptilian, but the pictures said otherwise, so I got a like new Presidio 5000SBK for $90. I can't carry it in my jurisdiction, but I can own it. Presidio quality at Griptilian Price= happy customer. I love clueless pawn shops!

"Clueless pawn shops" , haha that's awesome.

Admittedly , a part of me does want to shy away from the DLC coated blades because they may get scarred up rather easily. But I've heard very good things about Spyderco's DLC coating.

And that half serrated stone wash finish Manix2 looks beautiful too.

I dig plain edge blades. I've got two combo edges and one full serrated. The combos are a Mini CQC 15 with a coated blade and a BM 111. I like the Emerson with the combo edge, because of the chisel edge, the plain and serrations flow together quite well. I haven't used the 111 yet, my Rift gets all the carry time instead. My serrated blade is a Tasman salt. It hasn't gotten too much use but i like it enough.

Im slightly impartial to coatings. I like my Emerson's, ZT's and Spyderco are good as well. I didn't like it on my Izula because it was too thick it felt like it hung up in material when cutting. Instead of removing it all i should have just sanded it down some to where it was smooth. I think that would have worked out pretty well for my needs. For a coating it really depends on the maker and/or knife.

I've always been a plain edge non-coated fan, but recently I got a Utilitac 2 with a coated tanto blade and...I kinda like it. (especially for the $21 price tag) I'm still not a serrated fan but I might try some coated blades here and there.

I like simple blade shapes, spear points or drop points mainly, with a nice convex or flat grind, plain edge and satin finish. Those work best for me. However, since I've got a ton of knives like that, I've begun to buy a few coated blades, and even some serrated knives, just to try them out and have some variety.

That's how I've been feeling lately. All of my knives are satin finish , plain edge. I want to change things up a little. So I'm going to buy a few of my favorite knife designs but this time with either partially serrated or black coated blades. I'm getting excited.

I really dislike coatings and partial serrations, but neither will necessarily stop me from getting a knife I like. I do like full serrations as they handle some things quite nicely, but so few companies offer that option in a folder.
