Hey guys a friend gave me his Benchmade to sharpen for him over the weekend. It is his work knife and it is so dull I can't bring the edge back. What is that called, "I know a dull knife", but I think it is blade geometry? I just want to give him the right wording so he can send it back to Benchmade and let them re hone it. Yeah I am a dumda-- I know.

what are you using to sharpen it? you should be able to put a servicable edge on it. you may have some slight reprofiling to do but diamond hone will speed that up. If you are not comfortable in your abilities to do so have your buddy send it back to benchmade or better yet Tom Krein for one of his killer re-grinds.

instead of putting the factory v edge back on maybe you should try convexing the edge instead. i have some pictures i can send you that would help to do this. send me an email with your email addy rje196021@gmail.com here is a video of a knife i made and sharpened slicing newspaper. it is a chisel grind with a half convex edge http://knifetests.com/kII.html

You could send the knife to RichardJ and it will come back to you with no delay in turn around time. The video that Richard posted is impressive but the edge that he will do for you will be the best.

I have paper wheels and am learning to use them under Richard's guidance.

Also please note Richard's thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787

Thanks

The edge needs to be re-profiled, but using a sharpmaker or any angle guide system should do it on most steel that Benchmade uses. If it's D2, it might take a bit longer.

Got it guys thanks I will look these guys up, heck I may just have them work on some of my blades. I am using a diamond flat stone to get the edge back a little then finishing with a V ceramic sharpener, then moving to a strop. Re-profiled is the word I was looking for, if I can't sharpen it I at least want to sound like I know what I am talking about when I take it back to him.

There is no such thing as a knife so dull it can't be re-sharpened.

It sounds to me like your initial work on the diamonds hasn't gone far enough. As Richard J says, you must grind off enough metal to get a 'burr' on one side and then repeat on the other. Then some alternating strokes to get rid of the large burr before moving to the ceramics.
