Blade Removal on 880T Strider

Hey all. Heres my question. I picked up a Buck 880T Strider on ebay for 108, love it to death.

Now i got myself some good oil with it too, and proceeded to oil it when i got it. My guess is that i got to ahead of myself, and now i think i have gotten some crap between the liners. When i open and close the knife, it just feels dirty, like theres crap between the copper liners and the titanium liners, and possibly the blade, drives me crazy.

*Hypothetically* i tried to take out the blade. But when i got one screw out, the other one stayed it. The screw that came out went into the screw that wouldn't come out. The screw that stayed does spin, and i have no clue why it wont come out, maybe I'm too girly or something and really gotta push on it, but i wanna be careful.

So, how the hell do i get that second screw out so i can take out the blade, the copper washers, and throughly clean everything. *Hypothetically*

Also, heres some pictures of the knife, i thought some of you may be impressed. Its a first production run, 1 of 500. BG-42 blade.

The screw that is still in there is the pivot screw, it's what the screw you took out threads into. It is smooth on the outside of it, this is what the blade pivots on. Take your torks wrench and press it into the hole that the first screw came out of, this should pop out the other screw.

Agree.
Before you take it apart though, try a liberal squirting of WD40. Let it sit for a half hour, squirt it again, and then take a air compressor to it.

Well its kind of a nit picky thing, but I'm looking to get the washers out and clean them, and lube them before i put it back together. I got myself some of that White Lightning lube with wax in it, so it dries and seals out dirt and crap. Plus i don't have an air compressor. :D

So i guess its just a matter of pushing hard enough on the screw to get it out.

FWIW, I read your post again MWTBLTR (you need to buy a vowel :))...

Had the same thing on my 889LE that I took apart. As Michael stated, just take that little torky and push that pup out. If it is spinning you should be ok.

Welcome to the forum. I don't have anything to add other than that is one nice looking knife. You join an elete group of Buck BG42 owners (which unfortunately does not include me:( ). Congrats!

Well this screw really doesn't seem to want to come out. I have the male screw out, but the other one wont push out it seems.

I couldn't use a smaller torx socket because the smallest one i have fits the screw. So i have been using the end of an allen wrench and pushing that down there to try and push it out, and nothing.

The blade is really loose, and the screw moves along with the blade when i move it side to side, i can tell its hardly in there. What else is holding this thing in? Ill try and find something that i can use better to push on it, but i want to be kinda careful obviously.

Hey EIEIO...

I wouldn't push it if it isn't coming out now. Maybe try some WD40 on it and then try? Or just use the WD40 to clean it out.
But, I'm guessing you are curious now, as I am as to what is keeping it from coming out.

Have not taken apart my 881 so I will learn from your experience. Please keep us posted.

Nice pics BTW...

Is the blade in an unlocked position or is it still locked via the liner? If locked then unlock it and close the blade a little and see if that frees it up more. Both screws screw into the pivot. One was apparently loctited and the other wasn't. That is what is making it so hard to remove. If it were me I would go ahead and disassemble the entire knife at this point and really do a thouroughl cleaning of everything. I would like to know how things turn out.:D

Well heres what I'm thinking. Unfortunately i do not have a torx5 in my crappy little kit. But when i do find one, I'm going to try and take off the handles. Maybe i have to take the two half's of the knife apart in order to get the blade out.

EDIT: Well i think i figured out whats going on. If i kinda pry the blade to the side, spreading the liners, it looks like the pivot point for the blade is much bigger than the screw. So the screw, my guess is, gets much bigger when it gets past the liner, so its permanently in there. Ill get some pics when i get a small enough torx.

The pivot pin in these have 2 female ends and 2 screws, one on each side. You will have to remove both screws to take the pin out. The spacer barrels also have 2 screws each.

You will also have to take one side of the knife off, as the pivot pin is sandwiched between the G10 and nested in the titanium liners (it does not press against the liners).
You may need needlenose pliers to hold the spacer barrels when you unscrew them (too keep them from turning with the screw). You may not need it, but I had to.

Success!

I went to the hardware store and picked up a torx 8 bit. I got home and started taking out the handle screws, and it basically just fell apart:D . These pictures may be hard to look at, but its for your own good. (i got too ahead of myself with oiling when i got it).

So yes, ehhh was right and there was a drum with two female ends. You can see it on the top left of the last picture.

Goose this should be your new Sig. line :D

Congrats on getting the BG out of the G-10! Hope it helps smooth the opening/closing!

Ehhh...ahhh, how do I say this? Great tip or instructions. Great to know if I ever have to field strip my 881.

EIEIO, thanks for the GREAT pics. What camera/setting do you use? Love the detail like in the top pick of your 881 disassmebled. Let us know how the deployment action is when you get it back together, please.

All i have is some crappy HP 5mp camera, got it for a present, but i think its worth like 120$. All i used was close up mode and took two pictures, one with and one without flash and whichever looked better i used.

And i used some of my White Lightning oil on all the parts before i put it back together. It has wax in it, so it dries and creates a seal to keep dirt and crap out, i love it. It opens and closes smoother than when i got it.

Ill take some pics with the strider and Alpha Hunter later.

EDIT: Posted some more in the stickied pic thread.

I probably should have taken pictures when I had mine apart, but no need for that now. Nice pics!

Oddly, my First run BG-42 881 Spearpoint has the other style of washers (one small circular one and one pear shaped one).
