Blade replacement for Griptilian

Well, I finally did it... After EDCing my Griptilian every day for over the last year and a half, I sadly did a pretty good number to the blade. It was definitely my fault that it happened but now it needs to be fixed. I've heard that Benchmade will replace the blade for like $20-$30, but is that only with the same blade style that it came with originally? Was thinking of maybe switching to the tanto or standard blade instead of the sheepsfoot I've had. Any experience or preferences on blade style?

Give them a call tomorrow. I think they will replace the blade with any standard production blade.

800-800-7427 is the number. See the following link to include the printable form with a check for $5 made out to BKC, Inc. Just wrap the knife up and don't send it in the original box if you still have it. For safety when addressing the box it will ship out in, use the BKC reference over 'Benchmade Knife Company' and they always suggest insuring the package. Yes, USPS insures all priority packages for $50.

Good luck!

The damage is not so bad, there's plenty of life left in that blade. A re-grind of the blade would take care of it. A local knife maker or good sharpening service should be able to do the job in less than an hour. Of course if you want to try a different blade style... My take on the 551 blade vs. the 550: the standard 551 blade is pointier, and thus better at tasks where you need a narrow pointed knife, the hollow ground 550 blade slices better. The cutting performance of both is vastly improved by regrinding the blade so it is thinner behind the bevel at the cutting edge. The 551 blade with a full flat grind is probably my favorite, but they don't come that way from the factory

I'd just send in for the life sharp service to get the edge back instead of new blade.

I have a Mini Grip with a tanto blade that I would love to get traded out for the normal blade-----the tanto just isn't very useful

You can only get the blade from the same model number.

You can not make a 550 a 551 or 553. (blade style)

You only choices are the same style blade - satin or black - with or without serrations.

You can make a black serrated 550 a satin plain edge for example. But you can't make it Tanto.

Benchmade has swapped blade styles for me with no problem. Once on a mini Grip and once on a Presidio, both going from tanto to a drop point.

That's odd. I called about making a Tanto Barrage drop point and was told I couldn't change model numbers.

Did you call first or just send it in?

I called first. Their policy might have changed or it might just depend on who you speak with.

Yeah, I actually called them a few days ago and they said that (at least on the Griptilian) they can swap blades for $30 if it's satin and $40 (Ithink) for a coated blade. But the girl I spoke to said I could change to a tanto or the standard grip blade without a problem. I could pretty easily regrind the blade myself, but I'd rather go for something without serrations, and a little different blade style too so I'll probably just send it in eventually to do the swap. Might be a little while as I just recieved my new Adamas and Endura 4, and I have steel, belts, and all sorts of other things I need a little more than that right now.
