Hello All,

I'm looking for 2 flat stones / hones (medium and fine) to sharpen small and large knives (eg esee junglas)

I want one which will last a long time, I've read that both ceramic and diamond will last long ?

My budget is £100UK ($100 USD) maximum for both whetstones/hones.

What are the best options ?

Thanks for your time

Im thinking of going with the DMT® 8" Dia-Sharp® Sharpening Stones 1200 and 600 Grits ? Advice ? Will these last a long time ? Are they any good ? How do these compare with the spyderco sharpmaker when it comes to big knives ?

Anarkistic,
my recommendation is to pick upa set of DMT's credit card sharpeners. It comes with coarse, fine, and extrafine stones for a price of about $25.
However, they are rather small at 3"x 2"(hence the name credit card sharpener). If you want bigger stones, I'd go for the 6" dia sharp continuous stones in coarse, fine, and extra fine. They are $25-30 per stone, while the 8" are almost $50 per stone. I know you said you're only looking for medium and fine, but I'd suggest picking up a coarse as well.

Yes, they will last you longer than most other stones would The only maintenance the DMT stones require is rinsing off with water after use. There's no flattening, oiling, etc necessary. As for the Spyderco Sharpmaker, I don't have the answer to that question; I only use free hand stones, so I don't have experience with that system. However, I've sharpened several large fixed blades (such as a SOG Creed) on my credit card sharpeners...So I don't think you'll have any issues on a 6 or 8 inch stone.
