I'm kind of new to knives. I have never learned the proper way to sharpen a blade. To be honest, I'm almost afraid to try for fear of ruining the blade.

This is probably pretty remedial but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't worry. I was like that at first. In fact I debated with myself for about 10 minutes deciding whether or not I should sharpen my new BM 730 (which BTW really could use a sharpening because BM can't put a decent factory edge on anything). Well I just started. But then had to do other stuff, i'll finish in a couple hours.... get yourself a Lansky. It is the sharpest investment I've made so far. Easy to use. Try to put a little highlighter or magic marker on the edge and use the finest stone lightly on the edge and see which angle slot comes closest (removes all the magic marker). Start from higher angles and work down till you find the right one, then sharpen with that one. Sharpen on one side till you get a burr, then switch sides. Then after you do both sides with one stone, move onto something finer, until you are happy. I just take my leather binder and strop the edge on that. Works fine.
