Blade Sharpness

I have been buying a few knives here and there, and have noticed that some factory new knives are awfully sharp, and others are less so. These are all Spyderco, btw. Do some models leave the factory with blades less sharp than others? Or is it the steel variations? I'm not complaining, mind you, just curious.

The final sharpening is done freehand on a belt grinder, so there are variations between knives. I have to say, the worst Spyderco I ever got was better than the best of some other makers. YMMV ;)

Some knives just seem sharp. On most factory knives, I have to resharpen my own way. I like a polished convex edge. Most factory knives have angled edges, They are sharp out of the box, but the edges don`t last long. Some of my sharpest knives don`t feel sharp, untill I shave the hair off my arm(my wife hates this, I have little bald spots on my arms). Sometimes its the steel. I can always get a better edge on high carbon steel. Some of this new stainless steel like 420 i won`t even wast my time with. I have had some K-bar knives that just won`t take a good edge no matter what.

I've never had a problem with putting an edge on my Ka-Bars. Maybe you just had a bad heat-treat on the one you have. If I were you, I'd contact customer service; I've always had pleasant conversations with them. Oh, yeah, by the way, I consider "putting an edge" to mean hair-shaving sharp.

I've only bought one high quality knife, the 710, and it came shaving sharp out of the box. I read that some people got dull knives so I just thought I was marginally lucky.
