Who would be kind enough to fill in the blanks?

Custom awards and ABS Journeyman smith and Mastersmith acceptances.

I read on the CKD that Tom Ferry passed JS tests. Jack Levin won two awards, but what ones?

That's all I know.

Many thanks,

Coop

Hi Coop,
Missed ya buddy!
They announced these awards over a bad P.A. system, but here is what I heard (and remember).

Best Damascus - Raymond Rybar.

Jack won best folder and best collaboration.

Jason Knight - Best non-Damascus forged.

John L. Jenson - Best Fantasy.

Richard Rogers - Best Miniature.

Bailey won one, but I am not sure what the name of the award was.

Ray Rybar - Best Damascus.

Got to see those above and they were all well deserved.

Jerome Anders also picked up his M.S. stamp with Ken Duram. There were a three others if I am not mistaken, but I am a little fuzzy now after a long weekend and getting Tai to the airport early this morning morning. This was Goo's first Blade Show after all these years and he had a blast touching base with old friends. I certainly had a blast with him staying at the house since Thursday. (and he did not even mind all the goats :D). I can't wait to take a trip to AZ to spend a little more time with him, his family and friends at one of the Neo-Tribal get-togethers this fall.

Ken Duram won the A.B.S. TOMB award (best knife submitted by a M.S. candidate) and I think the Antique Bowie Knife award (Best Bowie submitted by a M.S. candidate).

Hopefully when Darby gets back home and settled he can fill in the many holes I have left here.

P.S. Reggie Barker won the pressure filled A.B.S. cutting competition.

Did not get to stay for all of the A.B.S. banquet since Deb's daughter went into labor at 8 P.M. on Friday.

I had also heard that Doug Noren had gotten his MS stamp. It is hard to get much news here in NE Oklahoma. ;) I had figured on Reggie taking it as he has exceptional fast hands. I would have loved to have been there.

Also pretty sure Reese Bose won an award for Best Folder for a 5 Blade Congress with Remington Bone.

Hope this helps.

JT

Burt Foster and Jason Tiensvold were also awarded their MS stamps...

Great seeing everybody.

John White got best new maker, and also best submission for JS knife. Though it's somewhat confusing to me how you can be a new maker and go through the JS test at the same time, so I may have gotten my info crossed somehow.

I have been brain dead. Jim R's knives were stunning and forgot Reese's award.

Thanks guys! Let's keep filling those holes.

If I read the sign posted outside the show office correctly, the Jack Levine/Chris Meyer collaboration folder not only won best collaboration knife, but took Best of Show!

Dennis Greenbaum

Yeah Baby!

PS. Awesome show BTW... :D

Ron Duncan got his JS as well.

Also, I'd like to give a BIG congratulations to my friend Reggie Barker from Springhill, Louisiana for winning the ABS World Championships Cutting Competition. Reggie just went full-time due to the company he was working for shutting down -- boy can I relate to that. Anyway, this should be a big boost for him. It is very difficult to go full-time overnight with no capital -- I speak from experience on that one too. :D

I just got off the phone with Reggie, and I believe that Camillus will be reproducing the knife he won with in the near future. This same knife won first place three times, took second once, and won the Championships.

Thanks guys, for the informative responses. Can't wait to see the photos posted or published.

Bailey won the antique bowie ass. award with a Bowie #1. I loved it to say the least. Good to see you again Gus.

Dylan,

The knife that won the Antique Bowie assoc award was commisioned by a customer of mine. I decided to make the knife to enter for the award since it is the first antique reproduction I had attempted. I didn't get to handle the original,( Bowie No 1) but went off of pictures, sketches and dimensions provided by makers who had handled and measured the original.

It was a real challenge, and I learned a lot from making it. It is a deceptively complex knife that required a lot of time pondering the next step. As fate would have it, when assembling the handle, a storm hit and knocked out the power. It was 11 at night, and I was placing the little domed washers and handle pins in place ( each pin in the handle is 1/16" through a domed washer that is 3/16". No pressure is placed on the walnut scales from pin swell that way...I.E. no handle cracking), and when the bolt of lightening hit that knocked out the power, I flinched and droped the washer. Never did find that goofy thing, and had to make another the next morning.

The knife is forged 5160, with the blade measuring 13 1/2". The knife is 18 1/4" overall. The full tang is file worked with a rope pattern on top and bottom. Silver sheet is then overlaid and driven down to reproduce the rope pattern, then soldered in place. The ricasso is wrapped in silver as well. The front edge of the walnut scales are wrapped in silver as is the rear of the handle. The tricky part of grinding the tang is that it tapers from the ricasso to the end, and from the spine to edge. The handle tapers from spine to edge as a result, but gets thicker from ricasso to butt. There are 10 pins with domed washers, and two pins through the silver wrap on the front of the scales. It wasn't identical, but had the correct feel and my customer was tickled pink so it was a success for me.

there is a picture of it in the gallery along with my other Blade show knives.

I must say it was an honor to win the award. With the likes of Harvey Dean and Ken Durham in the mix, I was very pleased.
