As many of us are heading to Atlanta, GA for BLADE, I'm asking you guys with the knowledge of GA knife laws to inform us and pass along information regarding open carry at the show and just around Atlanta in general. I would like to have my trusty BK15 on my hip or maybe something else I pick up a long the way. We all love our EDC fixed blades and I would hate for myself or any fellow folks around here to catch any heat or give knife nuts a bad name around the area for breaking the law. I suspect ATL was chosen for a reason for this event, but its better to be informed than assume. Thank you on advance for your responses!

The information in the linked thread concurs with what I've been able to find out.

Sb 432 removed the ability of municipalities to govern weapons carry.

Essentially anything with a blade under 5" is good to go, state wide. Barring ballistic knives, I'd imagine.

Over 5" requires a weapons permit. I was under the impression that this referred to a Georgia specific weapons permit. Some of the concealed carry folks would likely know better than myself.

Of note in the literature is that there is no mention of rules governing concealment or knife type.

Generally, we don't get hassled down here. If it were me though, in Atlanta, I wouldn't take any chances with that extra 1/2" on the 15.

Here is a link for the reciprocity for GA. Since the GA license covers all "weapon" types I would assume that reciprocity would apply in the same way, but I am not affiliated with law enforcement/lawyers so take that for what its worth which is just my opinion haha.

I live in the southern region of GA and will be at Blade. I go to Atlanta a handful of times a year and I never open carry a fixed blade because I just dont feel the risk of being hassled is worth it. I am not saying it will happen but its something I just don't chance. That said I have seen people open carrying large fixed blades at Blade show in the past. I do conceal carry a firearm and am a GWL holder.

gapacking.org in general is a good site for info on carrying in GA.

Another link, defining a "knife" and "weapon":

Thanks for the info guys. Guess I'll just have the 14 in my pocket. Like Shandryden says, not worth the hassle.

Honestly, I went to dinner with a knife that had a 15 inch blade on my belt...lol Its Bladeshow in Atlanta, they know whats up. I didnt see a single person get hassled for a knife on their hip. I carried 2 half the time.

Nice...
My brains a little fried at the moment as I'm feeling a little under the weather. I meant to add- until I get there and get a feel for things. I know my daughter already has plans to lug around her big WWII bolo machete thanks to Murph lol. This very second she's working on the right belt to carry it on her hip. I suggested carrying it with her hands but she didn't want to hear it lol.

The actual blade from tip to ricasso is only 5" of sharpened edge. 5.5 if you count the choil. There would be an argument to be had if you remove the scales as to the length of the blade vs the handle IF you choose to argue with Johnny...I choose to politely agree and carry on heh

No to go off track, but NC, do you have any pics of your daughter's WWII knife? Sounds interesting.

Yep, up to 5 inches. I was gonna have my BK7 on my hip but I'm lucky my uncle lives here and knows the laws

I have one of those bolos, nice knife, unfortuantly one of the scales is cracked.

And I don't think it was the knife Nos was interested in :D

By most court proceedings, the blade length has either been assumed to be, or categorically stated to be (depending on the court case), the straight line length of the blade from the tip of the knife to the front of the hilt, or where the hilt would be if the knife had a hilt. This would include the choil.

Yes sir, courtesy of Mistwalker at Becker east...

Out of curiosity is the bolo a Briddell, Village Blacksmith, Clyde Cutlery or Chatillon?

Village Blacksmith. Hope to catch up with Ed Fowler today. Word on the street is he's the man to get some history and info.

And she's only 12....going on 18
