I plan to attend the Blade Show. Does anyone know if there have ever been trade "meet and greets" set up during the show? I always thought it would be cool to have a cocktail party at one of the hotel ballrooms where knife collectors could meet and trade with one another in the evenings after the show. Maybe charge a minimal fee ($5) to cover the cost of the room and let everyone drink, talk knives, trade and sell.

Has this been done before?

If I remember right there is a little get together each night after the show...I think they call it the "pit" or somthing similar haha.

Well....aside from the drink park (as far as I know), that is pretty much what the whole Blade show is.

Seems like I've heard reference to that pit thing 9blades mentioned and I've heard rumors some folks get together during and after the show in some of the hotel rooms and watering spots around the area.

I have no personal knowledge, but I've gotten the impression there are those who view it as one big cocktail party and never make it into the Galleria at all. :D

I was under the inpresion that you weren't allowed to sell/trade anything at the show...ok I just realized how retarded that sounded haha. To clarify you aren't allowed to sell/trade unless you have a table/booth.

Of blade's website:

if you want to sell something, buy a table or a booth. If you’re not exhibiting, no soliciting of any sort is allowed. Any attendee soliciting exhibitors or other attendees will be removed from the Blade Show.

There is a very fine line. There is what is known as brown bagging or selling or trading at the show without going threw the coast of getting a table/booth. The dealers who did pay for booths and the blade show folks that who did not get paid for a booth get very up set about people brown bagging. So I would doubt any thing formally organized is posable. That being said people meet in the lobby bar "the pit" and in front of the hotel (think tail gate with more booze and no food). When a larger group of like mined people get together there is always some business done, and no body minds. That being said if you are doing enough that people notice (hustling) you will not be well regarded by a large group of people armed with at least several knives each. My advice is if you are looking for one or thing you really QUIETLY work the crowd if there is one thing you want to move work the crowd. Other wise get a table or fined a vender to broker a deal for you.

On a side note if you have not been there is a huge social seen and you will have lots of opportunities to talk, hang out, and net work after hours. There are several makers hosting dinners (they set it up you pay). If you can, get a room at the Galleria because that is the epicenter.

As a disclaimer I am a maker, I do have a both this year, and this will only be my 3rd show (one as a fan, one as an apprentice, and this one as a maker with my own booth). If you get their and need some guidance I have booth (220), stop by, I lived in the area, and will be glad to try and point you in the correct direction

I hope this helps and I hope to see you their

Just don't be overt about it on the show floor.

The plenary drinking session is in the pit, and there are plenty of breakout sessions at other facilities public and private.

I would never consider trading on the show floor and actually hadn't considered the offense to paying makers/dealer with even an organized trade off site. I can understand why such would be frowned upon. No harm in bar talk deals I guess. As the saying goes: it was just a thought, apparently a bad one.

Part of the value of a show to the tableholders and exhibitors is the number of people at the show. One of the reasons people come to a show is the opportunities to do a bit of private dealing. So, "unofficial" transactions don't necessarily "hurt" the tableholders and exhibitors; they draw people to the show who might not otherwise come and those are potential customers for the tableholders and exhibitors.

And there was one very notable person who was asked to leave after being caught red-handed holding his own little BrownBagBladeShow in his hotel room. Probably lucky he didn't catch a case of bloody snot bubbles.
