Blade Show Payment Methods...trying to learn from last time

Ok, I'm looking at ways to have better success than last time :) The only two booths that took credit cards when I wanted to purchase something were Busse & Microtech. Everywhere else seemed to be cash only.

How about Amex Traveler's cheques? Since they are essentially cash, do dealers/makers generally accept them as payment? I'm trying to find a better way to make sure I have funds available without traveling with a roll of cash in my pocket.

Debit cards are no good, the $350 daily limit ruins that route. Cash advances are bad because of the $50 fee for each advance.

Any thougts? Busse will hopefully get most of my money but I'm planning for the production pieces I know I'd like to purchase.

DN -- I had my bank raise the daily limit for my debt card to $600. That might be an option for you. :)

I wish :( Tried that for the last two years around the holidays...no joy.

I had absolutely no problem with travelers cheques. I had $50 ones. No prob at all. I spent 2 grand in AmEx TC and not a blink.

Maybe it wasn't her eye that blinked!

;)

Hi Dark Hog,

Last year was my first Blade. I bought some Swamp Rats(no Busse models that I wanted available), Doziers, and from 2 the Hilt. They all took CCs. Other commercial dealers did also. Yes, a lot, probably most individual smiths only took cash. However, I bought my first forged blade from a smith and he took funds in AMEX traveler's checks after he verified that it was indeed like cash. I spent most of my cash on travel incidentals and one knife from Christine Simonich.

Just hoping that this year the Busse booth will have those "special" models that are available to us hogs who made special trips to Blade. Jerry, show me the INFI!:D

I try to avoid using a credit card (esp. AMEX) when dealing with small businesses. They have to pay "points" to the credit card companies which is a percentage of the total sale plus a flat fee per transaction. For those of you that say "that is the cost of doing business", remember that increased costs to the manufacturer is passed on to the consumer.

I'm not knocking you guys for using AMEX traveler's cheques; but have you ever tried to make a claim because of loss/theft? I had 5k in TCs stolen from me. Made a claim with AMEX and they are a rude bunch. Had to jump through a lot of hoops and spent a lot of time on the phone to sort it out. Took over two weeks to finally get a refund.

Thanks for the info, however I do have to agree with your statement, "That is the cost of doing business". I have no problem paying slighly more to a merchant for the convenience of using American Express if they would like to pass along the cost. It stinks having to carry a Master Card just for CC enabled locations that do not accept American Express.

Only lost TC's once while in Canada, had them replaced ASAP with none of the problems you mentioned. I find their traveler services to be outstanding.

Memeber since '00, the only card I won't give up :)

*** Edited, wrong card date, lol ***
