In keeping with my current craze of Dr. knives and daggers (with occasional off-shoots all over the place) I was pretty fortunate this year.

All of these knives have stories behind them, but I will keep the descriptions short.

The first one is a Damascus Dagger by Sava Damlovac. I had heard about this knife from several knifemakers and was elated when Sava called me before the show and said the knife was available. (Insert real long mushy story here)

Knives aside, Sava is one of my best friends. He is a retired machinest residing in Indianapolis and makes knives only because he loves to. (I think this is the 7th knife he has made since he obtained his Journeyman's Stamp. We have planned to visit friends in Arkansas this fall right before the A.B.S hammer-in and I am already counting the days. This man is one of the nicest, patient people I have known and his passion for knives is second to none.

Some bastid and Sava. (Picture by Ray Kirk - raker) Thanks again Ray!

The blade is 2500 layers of damasucs forged and ground and heat treated by the maker. The handle is fluted oosic sith twisted gold wire. The guard and and quillions are 416 stainless. Sava has the knife for engraving on the guard and stone inlays in the quillions. I send Richard Rogers traditional patterns to study every once in a while. Before the show he wrote me and said he had one if I wanted it. I wrote him back that it did not matter what it was, I would love to have it this is what I ended up with. Blade and spatula are ATS-34. Handle is quilted mother of pearl, the 416 stainless bolsters are integral to the liners. This is the first doctor pattern he made with a spatula. Next years promises to be pretty special too.

I also sent a few patterns to Joel Chamblin. I have been bugging him for a Doctor's knife since I met him five or six years ago. Since he lives near me, he gave me a call and said he had one (again if I wanted it). He got the same answer as Richard. The liners on this one are 410 SS, Bolsters 416 SS; pearl handle with ATS 34 Blades.

While I was picking up the Doctor's knife I asked to see the other stuff Joel had for the show. This small coke bottle pattern in black lip with 18k gold pins and shield decided it was going home with me too.

You are up too Bob. I saw those folders and drooled a little over the stag fixed blade you had there.

Watches be damned. All they ever do is tell you you're late. But Gus, that dagger is spectacular!

Thanks for sharing.

Oh, and if you happen to take, say, 14 or 15 more pictures of it from different angles with close-ups and whatnot I suppose I wouldn't mind so much if you posted them here too...

Hiya Gus, meeting you and Sava was one of the high points of the whole weekend. Sava's dagger is amazing, I got to handle it at Don's BBQ and several times during the show. I never did get to see your Dr's knives, how did that happen?

Hey Phil, the other knives were on the makers tables during the show. I have a habit of buying the knives early and leaving them for the makers to display during the show so the they can at least have an extra knife on their tables to take orders from.

I take them home during the evenings and bring them back before the show starts kinda like "day care" as Sally Rogers puts it. (These two guys sold out early on Friday along with a few others).

Great knives, Gus! Thanks for sharing them with us. I love pearl, and the scales on both the Chamblins are truly gorgeous! The MOP scale looks about a mile deep. Beautiful.

I've been wanting a Doctor's knife for a while now, but those two blew me away. Usually I'm not a fan of MOP but you might have just changed my mind! Is the Roger's piece checkered in that the squares go down into the MOP? How does he do that? Beautiful knives!

Gus, you know I made the same offer to Kit with my Stellite & Stag M4. I could tell you what he told me, but it would only show up like "**** that!" here.

Sorry folks I have been out of town this weekend and just got back.

Richard call it quilted pearl and he checkers the pearl with a file.
The thing that also get me going on these custom slip joints is the back of the knife. The fit of the backsprings and liners that these guys and others accomplish never ceases to amaze me. No use in looking for a gap, the challenge is to actually see the seams.

The watch is there most likely because Tom traded one of his fantastic knives for it at the Blade Show and he likes to keep things on the lighter side around here and that is a good thing!

I'm still trying to figure out who got the best deal. (I told the guy at the subway station that had a coat load of watches to stalk up towards the middle of next May
