We want all table and booth holders at Blade 2011 to know the potential risks they face. Before going further an important point must be made. Missy Beyer, Mary Lutz and Steve Shackleford work for Blade Magazine. The people who run Blade Show are completely separate from Missy, Mary and Steve.

At Blade 2010 we had more than $13,000 in materials stolen. We were not the only supplier who had materials stolen. There are several facts that led us to the conclusion that the theft occurred after show hours.

We discovered the theft after we returned from the show and completed inventory. We called Blade Show coordinator Alicia Newton, Cobb Galleria Security and Cobb County Sheriffs department with whom we subsequently filed a police report.

When we spoke to Cobb Galleria Security, we told them we wanted to review the security video from the show. They informed us we would have to pay $40 per hour to review the video. We agreed and said we would have someone fly back to Atlanta. Cobb Galleria Security then said they did not know if the video was available. Later they said the video had been overwritten and could not be reviewed. We checked and there were no shows after Blade up to the time we requested the security video.

The Cobb County Sheriffs department told us theft is a problem at the Galleria. The detective told us thieves fly from around the country and world to attend shows at the Galleria.

At the beginning of 2011 Alicia Newton contacted us and requested we send in our deposit and sign the contract for Blade 2011. We said we would not send the deposit or sign the contact until significant changes were made. The most significant change was removing the clause from the contract that indemnifies F&W vendors i.e. the security company. We wanted the option of suing the security company if we could prove a loss occurred after show hours. We first communicated with Alicia Newton and moved up to her director Cory Smith. Cory agreed to several changes but refused to revise the contract. We were happy with the progress and sent in our deposit as a sign of good faith.

The last week in April our deposit was returned and we were informed our booth had been sold. We e-mailed and left telephone messages with David Blansfield the vice president of F&W. David replied in an e-mail that the contract would not be changed.

One fact I learned during this process is very disturbing. The room is accessible to cleaning and maintenance staff after show hours. These people are not escorted by security. In 2005 a major theft occurred after show hours by a person dressed as maintenance staff.

Bottom Line:
• F&W protects their vendors rather than their clients
• The security company has no vested interest in providing security
• Thieves know about the security problems at the Galleria
• Anything you leave at your table or booth is at risk
• You are responsible to protect your property

There is much more to the story that I have left out. We want people to know the risks they face so they can make plans to avoid the risk.

Jon & Jessica will be attending Blade 2011 but they will not have materials. Missy helped us get a table table across from our booth.

We will also be posting the security risk information on the major forums. If you want to express an opinion, the following is the contact information for F&W show staff.

Thanks for posting that, Chuck!

It is a WELL KNOWN FACT that F&W has shifted from the previous show owner's interest in supporting the community, and making a concurrent buck off of the effort to being shamelessly pro-dollar, and NOT supporting the people who ultimately pay the bills, ie tableholders and attendees.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

This is disturbing news Chuck. So sorry for your loss last year. There should be more that you can do but thanks for the warning, it will defineatly save others from the same fate. It must have happened on Saturday night or you would have missed that much inventory gone on Saturday day.

$13,000?! That's awful. Seems like it might be worth it for some of the booth holders to hire their own security to watch their tables after hours. Cobb/Blade staff probably wouldn't go for it though.

That sucks on so many levels. Thanks for letting us know about this Chuck. I've always left my knives on the table overnight.

Chuck: That is very disturbing in a variety of ways. I can remember way back when at the NY show when they would bring in guard dogs, turn them loose in the room, and lock the doors. Private security personnell were posted at every door. Magically, nothing was stolen. I guess times have changed for the worse, again.

I am sorry for your loss, and the show will be diminished without your presence.

That really sucks! I hope you guys have an insurance policy to help ease the financial pain of that loss. Of course $13,000 in materials stolen actually means probably more like $20,000 in lost profit and potentially lost new clients. I have lost over $40,000 in equipment thefts in the last 6-7 years but with damage to other property and lost time its probably over $50,000. Loser theives will steal everything not nailed down! And then they resell it for half its value too...My advice is that the time and hassle to pack up all your wares each night is worth it! Also, has anyone tried using a steel jobbox? You could store it under the table when not in use, pack your stuff in overnight and lock up tight, the only way in is to drill out the lock...Just remember if you and a friend can pick it up, so can theives, so put a couple bags of sand or cement in the bottom!;)

I am guessing they would pull the "That is too much of a security risk, we don't know your security guard" then when stuff shows up missing they would have someone else to blame... Sorry to hear about the theft, that is a lot of money for them to basically sweep it under the carpet. They should be held liable regardless of their involvement, it's their job.

how about some web cams and a cheapie laptop linked to the internet on yours and some surrounding tables

I've had similar , but cheaper experiences elsewhere- with "security"

No one will look after your interests like you will.

What kind of items were targeted ?
I imagine that ivory would be a big target.
& I wish we had those kind of huge shows here in Canada

How do you prove that loss to your insurance company?

What else did you leave out ?

Ya know thats a heck of a good idea. There are 13 cameras at our local 7-11 and they dont have security trouble anymore.

Chuck,

Let me know if I can help with this. (20 minute drive for me at the most.)

Folks, let's keep our eyes wide open at any show. Makers, I guess leaving work on your table overnight might not be a good thing to do.

If I can lend anyone a hand, just let me know.

Gus

Not sure about supplies/materials, but Everyone can get insurance to cover their knives, no matter where the knives are.
Cheap too!

Regarding the theft at last year’s show, there was one incident reported during the event and one well after the event. This is very low by industry standards for an event with thousands of attendees and exhibitors. However, we’re not satisfied even with that low level of incidence; like you, we want a completely secure environment for our exhibitors.

We appreciate Mr. Bybee’s efforts to improve on the security performance at the Blade Show and have worked to achieve that objective. Here are the proactive steps that are in place as a result:

- Security is positioned at all access points to protect the perimeter of the Show. There will also be a roaming guard throughout the interior of the hall

- Security cameras are positioned throughout the exhibit halls and the security team will review the footage with the claimant to attempt to identify suspects

- At the close of show each day, the event staff and the security team will sweep the hall to make sure that everyone is off of the show floor within 10 minutes of the show’s closing. This is not designed to be difficult or to hinder business discussions. This is a very important step to securing the event for all exhibitors. We would appreciate your assistance in clearing the floor at the close of the show each day.

- Event staff and security staff will oversee the cleaning crew at the close of the show each day and will escort the cleaning crews from the show floor to ensure that we have a complete lock-down.

- We encourage all exhibitors to secure, cover, or store all valuables during non-show hours.

Should you have further questions or concerns, we invite you to contact the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department to discuss the Galleria's security as it relates to events like the Blade Show. They can be reached at 770.499.4600. Larry Green, head of security there, has told us that there never has been a fee to access security tapes in the event such review is necessary. However, after 30 days, if a report is not filed, the tapes are taped over, so it is indeed essential that, should an incident occur, an incident report is filed promptly with Galleria security, show management security – Eagle Security Services -- and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department.

Thanks to everyone for working with us to make the Blade Show as secure as possible.

Sincerely,
BLADE Show Staff

This is appalling. I have only heard of a few light finger problems at the shows I have attended. This should be headline news in the knife industry. NO-ONE should be allowed on the show floor after hours except the security personnel. Then the security Co should be held responsible for proven theft esp after hours. I guess I will be taking my product back to the room with me. But even then it is at the disposal of the hotel staff. No win situation here.

Don could you PM the link or info on your insurance co? I would appreciate it.

seems to be a major issue to me...
