Hi folks I am going to use this thread for Blade Show stuff. Stay tuned for the Custom Awards. I will post them here as soon as I can.

It was great to see a bunch of folks during setup and in the lobby today. This is my favorite and busiest weekend of the year by far so bear with me. Got to spend a little time with Kit and CJ. The knife CJ made that he posted a picture of is awesome. (at least 10 times better than the picture. No exaggeration whatsoever). CJ definately has quite a bit of natural ability.

Dick Atkinson was the first person I saw when I walked through the door. He will of course have his selection of reasonably priced and well made users. Dick has a great wit and is someone I always enjoy spending time with. He is also quite capable of making some fine high end knives also.

Ken O. and Kershaw are comming out with another one and it is not a liner lock - got to play with the proto that Ken made and I like it a lot very unique and solid locking mechanism. Got to play with a few others he was carrying. They were all pretty special even though he call them his beaters.

Larry Chew was hanging around too. He has started making some tiny autos that are sweet as usual. In addition he has a collaboration going with Ti-knives and has been instrumental in revamping their manufacturing process.

John Fitch is there and if you like fine big knives get on board soon. John is one of the nicest guys you will want to meet and his knives rank up there with some of the finest in my book.

Mel Pardue was hanging around in the lobby and looks like his injury is healing up quite well. Johnny Stout and Ralph Turnbull were around the lobby and I enjoyed seeing them again. Can not wait to see what they have brought to the show.

I missed Howard Faltz, but got to see Larry of Knife Art. Jay and Karen of AZ Custom knives and Les of Robertsons Custom Cutlery are going to have some great stuff up on their sites after the show.

Had dinner with Bub Worrel and Sava Damlovac;
they are both as excited as I am. They have become good friends over the years and it was great spending some time with them.

Got to see Spark for a few min. He left the tutu in FL so we are guarenteed a great show. Wish all of you were here, but I am looking forward to meeting many of my new found net knife buddies tomorrow.

I will try to be a little more concise and provide some legit info as the weekend goes on. If you have ever spent 4 days at the biggest knife show in the world, you can understand why I am rambling tonight in anticipation of the opening tomorrow.

Don't you dare be concise, Gus. Tell us every detail!!!! We are the lonely, we are the non-blade show attendees.

Thanks Gus, and please don't be concise, give us a feel of the show. Ramble on, I for one will be hanging on every word. Sure I want to hear about the knives, but even more important I want to hear about the people; the makers, the dealers, and especially our BF members.

BTW have a great time

Here we go folks my day started at 5:00 and I got home at 10:15.

Let's start off with the Custom awards. I want to thank Steve Shackleford of Blade for providing me this list (very nice fellow Chattanoogan - my home town)

Best Colaboration - Vince Evans and Richard Rogers. This knife was absolutely beautiful.

Best Handmade Art - Rick Eaton.

Best Utility Hunter - Masao Takahashi.

Best Miniature Folder - Van Barnett
(Does any one have any doubts about his ability now. He or Delana (his wife) seem to win awards at every major show. (Have to brag on them a little they are both good friends).

Best Miniature Fixed - Charles Weiss

Best Damascus Design - Tim Foster

Best Handforged - Roger Massey

Most Inovative Design - P.J. Tomes

Best Fantasy Knife - Rick Barrett

Best New Maker - Conrad Bondee (Beautiful stuff here is another guy to watch.)

Best Fixed Blade - Tim Hancock
(Why we don't talk about his knives more I do not know. Tim is one of the best.)

Best Handle Desigh - Zaza Revishvili

Best Folder - Richard Rogers (Your not so humble moderator told ya so a couple of years ago don't watch anymore jump on board.) Richard made a beautiful Wharncliff whittler that I picked up. I will post some pictures later. This was a must have for me since I sent him a few knives from my collection to study and this knife was based on one of the patterns.

Best Fighter - Joe Flournoy

Best Miniature Overall - Van Barnett

Best in Show - Richard Rogers (That is three for Richard at the same show in case you were not counting

)

Ok so much for what I considered as well deserved awards.

Got in there around 8 this morning with a years worth of knife savings and was broke in 1/2 an hour. I hold the TKCL award certificate in my hand for "Most Bucks Blown In The Least Amount of Time" Oh well a diet of oatmeal for a few months and road kill for the dogs and I will be able to start making my mortgage payments again

Purchases included a John Fitch Mosaic Damascus bowie with stag handle.

Darrel Ralph Auto - This is a very little baby with a rocker release colored damascus blade Sculpted black pearl inlays in a damascus frame with gold rocker release and backstrap.

Rob Simonich Wharncliff Neck knife in Talonite.

Richard Rogers Pearl Wharncliff Whittler.

The Tkcl dinner that Steve and I host annually was fantastic with the likes of Howard, James Mathis, Ken Onion, Alan and Val E., Sava Damlovac, Bub Worrell, Danbo, B~B, Steve, Louise and Jim Weyer, Lynn Griffin and his wife, Larry Chew, and about 30 others.

Other TKCL awards included Alan for his used of jigged bone and mokeme (neither of which belong on a knife

.
B~B for getting to Atlanta against all odds
(He was in the hospital with a crushed pelvis a week ago).

Danbo - Biggest honkin' Bowie.

Jim and Louise - Most likely to publish the next book that will drive us all crazy.

Folks there is no way to mention all the stuff there that deserves mentioning and I have not made it to all the tables yet, so here it goes from my highlights of the day.

Finally got to meet Tim, great guy with a fantastic sence of humor. Yoda - do not let the name fool ya very nice young man.

Got to spend a little time with Ron and Ray Appleton. Their knives are second to none and are a blast to try to figure out.
John Jensen's (Magnus Design) (see the thread about the site that blows me away) designs are even more awesome in person.

J.A. Harkins and Jerry Corbit had IMO the finest Autos at the show that I saw today.
(Larry Chew did not have any for sale, and I have not gotten to Johnny Stout's table to oogle yet)

Bill Moran, Jerry Fisk and Al Barton are some of the finest gentlemen you would want to meet The ABS is in good hands with them and the Cordovas.

smile.gif
Audra Draper, Ed Caffrey, and Josh Smith are A.B.S Master Smiths as of this morning. Congratulations you three I feel that the ratings are well deserved.
biggrin.gif

I have been drooling over Ed's quillion dagger all day and about drove him crazy I am sure
smile.gif

Jerry Hosum and his work are fantastic.

Nite for now, the ABS breakfast is at 7:00, my feet have very little feeling, my face is sore from the goofy all day smile and my wake up will be at 5:00 so I can pick up Bub and Sava and get there on time. I will try to get some pictures posted tomorrow or Sunday.

As far as the show tomorrow, I am taking a big magnet and staying close to Dexter, he will never notice that I am hitching a ride.

Thank you, Gus. This eases the pain (slightly) of not making the show. Your fast hemmoraging of cash is an example for us all. Nicely done!

Hi Gus,
Me being so dumb occasionally, I didn't realize you were Gus from the forums here until after I had left today. I met you while talking with Roy Fazalare. I ordered a half whittler from Richard Rogers and also bought his little single blade folder with ivory scales. Richard's work is fantastic.

That's a beautiful bowie, Gus, but from the look on Mr. Fitch's face I'm afraid your check might have bounced.

Thanks for the updates and pics. It really helps to make me feel like I'm a part of things.

You know- I'm an intelligent person, I make wise decisions. Every day, I'm responsible for thousands of people's jobs and millions of dollars worth of technical equipment. I know it's a foolish thing to drift into slumber cradling my new Hossom. But it just feels so nice, and I'm so sleeeeepy...
