Grinding with 60 and 120 isn't bad at all. Then, I get to 220 and the blade starts skipping and jumping everywhere

I had some nice grind lines until the 220. Used a tennis shoe to clean up the belt, but still, the blade jumps around. Help!!

one.....you are probably pushing too hard.. and two, you cant use pressure on a dull belt, it wont cut, just pull down, try a fresh belt. Are you using a one speed machine? I rough grind on a 2hp bader but after that I switch to a variable speed wilton...yes I know that costs money.....but my knives come out nice that way.

Getting decent results with finer belts was one of the toughest things to learn. I do all my work on beat up old fixed speed grinders. The key to using 220 grit is to not use it very much. By that I mean all of your grinding and smoothing should be done after the 120 belt. Beyond that all you should be doing is sanding with a light touch. As Tom says, let the belt do the work. If you lean into it, it will tend to grab the blade and wipe out your nice clean grind lines.

Good luck.
