I would appreciate any information that I can get regarding 3V steel. I have seen several smiths and sales folks make reference to it, but I cannot find much about it. The standard claims tough, indestructable ect, ect. How does it stand up to rugged use, corrosion, abuse ?. Does this material lend itself to forging or stock removal best?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom,

Thanks for direction to the right place. Although I did not find the listing for 3V, I have found other reference to similar materials that with some poking around I`ll come up with what I`m looking for.

Once agian, thanks.

I have heard or read that 3V is very similar to S30V except that it is less rust resistant. I think I read this in blade. I have one knife in 3V, but it is a sweet Bailey Bradshaw MOP slipjoint so it doesn't exactly see hard use.

3V is much tougher than S30V.....but I think it doesnt hold an edge as well.....one of the toughest blade steels around. I am sure Crucible will send you (fax) a complete spec sheet if you request it.

Great information guys, digesting the specs included in the links will keep me busy for a day or two. It looks like 3V should make a good blade, money and time will tell.

Thanks

3V is a very tough steel, and has a very fine grain structure, allowing it to take a wickedly sharp and fine edge. But it will rust and corrode easily, and crucible rated it Not Applicable for its polishability. The edge can also corrode very easily, making it seem to get dull, and is difficult to grind and finish. but it makes a great high carb blade when toughness is needed.
