I have purchased a used sebbie in BG-42. {soon to arive on my door steps}It will be an EDC. I will probably send the knife to CRK to be sharpened and polished. I have been thinking of haveing them make me a blade of the new s30V. My question is this; Will the BG-42 blade hold an edge as good as the newer metel they are useing? and would it be worth the $100 price for a new blade made of the s30v? What do you old hands think?
Thanks again,
Jay

BG42 is an excellent steel, and would be my preferred blade for a Sebenza if it was still available to order new.

The BG42 blade will take and hold an excellent edge, and I cannot think of a single reason why you should have an S30V blade made for your knife.

I have herd somewhere that s30v has a tendency to chip? Is this true? and is it with certain knife makers or specific companies? but just am interested in the metel performance. Possibly a future knife purchase
thanks guys,
Jay

I’ve seen a few chipped S30V blades, but never on a Chris Reeve.

Sean O’Hare seems to do S30V very well, but then I would expect that from someone with fit and finish on a par with Chris Reeve Knives.

The only knives I heard of chipping are the ones that Cliffy, The Backyard Hack changes the edge angle on. He reprofiles his blades to 8 degrees and sets it up for failure (which he has admitted). Any steel that is setup with that edge angle will chip an edge.

My Large Micarta has an S30V blade. I use it everyday and I have been rough on it. I have dulled the blade but never chipped it. A few passes on a Sharpmaker restored the edge to hair popping sharp.

I've heard of a number of spyderco and benchmade knives chipping. My UKPK suffered for a fair amount of chipping when I followed the factory grind (15per side). I haven't heard of any CRK chipping either

What is your 'everyday" use of your knife ?

Let's see...I've cut some radiator hosing, cut up about 5 thick cardboard boxes which had some heavy duty staples, trimmed some small branches around my property, cut speaker wire, pryed loose some staples in my door jamb, scraped glue off of my granite countertop, dug out some roots in the garden...want me to go on?

Guys, Thanks for the input. I will stay with the BG-42 blade it comes with. Just the pollish and sharpen job from CRK should do it for me.
Thanks again,
Jay

Mine has s30v and I did chip up the blade a bit. It had the original edge on it and I was just using it normally for various different tasks nothing I would have thought was abusive.
then, I noticed that it was all chipped up. not sure which specific cutting job did it.Took a good while on the edge pro to get it back into shape

Can the Sebenza be ordered with the BG-42 blade or, does this have to be procured though preowned channels?
