Hello. I own a spyderco starmate with CPM 440V steel. I was wondering what this steel is comparable to other more popular steels? I haven't seen this steel being used anymore.

As far as I know, the steel in no longer in production. It is also known as S60V. It has a higher vanadium content than S30V, making it more wear resistent. Some people find it difficult to sharpen, but I've not had that problem when using diamond hones. Personally I love the stuff. If it wasn't for S90V, it would be my favorite steel in the Military.

440V is kind of similar to S30V...more wear resistant but with a generally lower working hardness. In my own very limited experience S30V, seemed to hold an edge slightly better than 440V. I guess for me S30V's higher hardness was more of a factor than 440V's greater wear resistance, YMMV.

Yes, sir. Crucible changed the name of 440V to S60V
Here is the crucible product data sheet for S60V. Notice the parenthetical 440V in the title line.

And I likewise understood that S60V had been dropped from the production schedule.

I had a Kershaw Random Task in this steel. I loved it (the steel, not the knife). I sold the knife, but not because of the steel. I thinned the edge on 220 grit wet/dry paper then sharpened and touched up on a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Good edge holding, very toothy, aggressive edge, while still easily shaving, and no toughness issues except for cutting the top off a can of baked beans at a picnic. That chipped it pretty good. On the other side, it cut copper wire like paracord with no damage. I kinda wish I'd kept the knife now.

On my grade it is better then CPM S30V and any other steel, but behind ZDP189 and most likely be behind CPM S90V.

Thanks, Vassili.
