Blade Steel? (newbie ?)

Gday Guys,

New to the forum, and I have a question, would the steel used in circular saw blades (3-4 mm thick) or chainsaw bars be any good for knife making? I have an abundance of both and was wodering if the steel would be any good and what type of steel that it might be?

Most folks who are in a similar situation do 1 of 2 things:

1 - send a sample off for metallurgical testing.
2 - just bang it, try to HT it and see what happens.

Even "proven" sources such as saws, leaf spring, lawnmower blades, etc., have turned out to have variable steels used to make them.

#3 search the massive posts here and on other forums to tap the wealth of the years and masses,,, not just the few who might see your post,,
