how many different blade steels are the boa's made of? and is one better than the others?:)

The older Boa's were made of CPM440V(S60V), the newer ones are S30V.
I wouldn't say one is better then the other, It just depends on what you
consider better. If you took both steels at more acute angles..say 15 or
less per side, the S30V holds a better edge. At..lets say 20 per side, the
S60V would hold an edge longer. I'm not sure when the change over was
made. Maybe Thomas could confirm this. Either steel is a great performer
IMHO.

Hope that helps.

rr, you are correct. Kershaw did the 440V in the multi-color, the S60V and then the S30V in all black. Personally, I like the performance of the S60V for EDC once thinned out a bit.

just checked my black boa and it has cpm440v blade. did they put born days on the old boas? i can't seem to find one on mine. :) SPX what did you pay for your multi-colored boa?

Jack, last question first: a lot! :D But it's one of those discontinued models that I wanted in my collection.

I'd guess your black Boa with the 440V would be around 2001 to 2003...it should have a BOD and it can be found on the opposite side of the blade from the stud, right up against the handle. When you close the knife, start to look for it as you pass 90 degrees. Somewhere between there and about 55 degrees, you should be able to see it.

Just a sidenote, IIRC, the "ST" in the Kershaw model number indicates that it is a serrated or partially serrated blade model. It does not indicate blade steel type.

From what I've read, the S60V has better wear resistance than the S30V, but the S30V is tougher and less prone to chipping under harder use.

From my own personal use, I actually prefer the S60V. The edge retention has been better for me, and I don't typically use my knives hard enough to chip the edges.

I would almost swear that I had an older multi color with 154cm several years ago

The BOD is hard to see on the black 440V. Mine is MAR02.

i just checked mine tonight and could not find the bod on it,this was even after i took it apart. :)
