Blade Steel on an old Sebenza?

My cousin gave me his old sebenza, and there is no stamp on the blade telling me what kind of steel it is. Its a large regular sebenza, and he said that he thinks it was the first year that the sebenza came out.

Any ideas on if its bg42 or ats34?

It's beat up as hell, has no edge, and it'll take me forever to sharpen I bet, but it seems to be in working condition otherwise.

What exactly is involved in sending it back? How would you reccommend packaging it to send it in? How much would I have to pay to have them refurbish it/how do I pay?

Thanks for the help/clarificiation.

oh, and should I ask them to reprofile it to 15 degrees? Or leave it at 20?

I've had a sebenza reconditioned before. The reconditioning job they did was, IMHO, was one of the better deals on the planet. As opposed to having folks take guesses, I would call Heather at CRK, describe the condition of the knife, and let her give you a quote. I have no doubt that it will be a very reasonable price given what they're doing. Have the knife sharpened to factory specifications. After many thousands of Sebenzas being manufactured, the CRK staff is VERY good at optimzing their own product.

Good luck with it!

First, contact CRK (E-mail: crkinfo@chrisreeve.com or 208-375-0367) and explain the knife that you have and what you would like done with the knife.

To give you an idea of what they can do (this is from their website):

All prices and details are subject to change without notice. Minimum shipping and handling charge is $9.00. Please contact us for exact costs.

Refurbish handles (sand blast or polish, depending on the model ) ~ $23.00

Polish or retumble blade (depending on the model) and sharpen ~ $23.00

If needed, parts may be replaced - we will discuss relevant costs with you.

I normally wrap the knife (in the closed position :D) in tissue paper and then wrap it in bubble wrap. Embed the knife in packing peanuts (USPS priority box) and ship it insured and with delivery confirmation.

You can discuss payment when you talk to them, but they take credit cards and I'm sure money orders.

CRK is the best. I sent my knife to be resharpened for $9.00 I think it was, and when the knife came back it looked brand new. You just cant beat their service.

I sent out the knife on the 27th, they said that it should be coming back here in about another week from today.

I'm excited because the ATS 34 comes with a mirror polish rather than the stonewash that I see everywhere. :D

This is heresy I know but I wish mine was ATS-34 or even BG-42. Anything other than S30V !

Well, I called a little while ago wondering where my knife was... turns out it will be another week. They just shipped it out today.

:/ that's the second extension they have made, at least its been mailed now.
