I have a couple of older 110's , and did'nt realize Buck had a custom shop until I read it here. I was wondering if they offered blade steel options? Thanks.

If you order a custom shop 110 you can order different steels. But Buck no longer does the blade swap into old knives. Good luck! Theres lots of pics and threads about them enjoy!

hey savanna,

Indeed they do; ats-34, bg-42, damascus when available, your other two options are s30v from cabelas , 154cpm from bass pro shop. Hope that helps. sorry for short phrases, typing with one hand; holding a couple of babies

mirror polished 420HC, satin 420HC, Black oxide coated 420HC... serrated (OR not) Brass bolsters, nickel silver bolsters... cherrywood, oak, buffalo,... pins, no pins... :D LOL

Good luck!

Thanks wh4f. Do you happen to know what some of the steel options are? Also I can't seem to find the custom shop on Buck's website.

ATS-34 / 154CM is one of my favorite Buck steels!!! Great stuff!

Dont forget we like pics of them ;) Thank you!!!!!!!

Geez, and after that last go round, let's remember that it's three pins, not four!! ;)

Need help guys. I'm a brand new wannabe knife guy...still trying to learn the ropes. I see several buck knives - same models, different steels. Bass Pro Shops is selling a Dorado folder and a mini alpha hunter with "...CPM 154..." steel. It looks like a powdery coat sort of.

From Buck's website, it looks like their best steel is (in order):
1. S30V
2. BG-42
3. ATS-34
4. 420HC

So...better to have this "cpm 154" or something else (in these two models particularly)?

decisions, decisions...

well... as 110's were mention i feel free to chime in on steel ...:foot:
oh btw there is a poll on steel choices in a custom knife :
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=701
plug and vote buying there in case none of the rest of ya noticed..
all the steels are harder to sharpen then the 420HC
of them all s30v is the hardest to sharp from a badly used edge..
bg42 is a fav as is 154 CPM..
ats-34 :thumbdn:i dont like because it is a japan copy :thumbdn:of CPM154
and i dont like copy cats!!!

now my personal fav is the S30V... ( i like old 440C also )
but i have not used the others much so i am not un-bias ;)
oh Sue, the Goose would not ask if it would make him sick to know ...
any one that loves span and has a custom spam cutter! :barf:
like ya know that un answerable question ...
how could ya make a spam lover sick?...:p

In 'theory', the CPM154(Crucible Powder Metal) steel is tougher than the 154CM due to it's finer grain structure and better mix of elements. The finish on the Bass Pro CPM knives is a mid-gray mirror finish, which looks very good. I have the BP Alpha Dorado and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Sir, the finish on both 154CPM and S30V is Titanium Nitrite. A very strong protective coating used in many other applications. DM

I have carried S30V since we started using it and it impresses the heck out of me. I don't find it that much harder to sharpen compared to how much longer the edge lasts. I have not carried the 154CPM but our edge testing showed it outperforming 154cm and the originally (but not so much anymore) better quality controlled and copied recipe Japanese ATS-34.

As for BG-42...I found that the S30V at 60.5 rc held as good of an edge as BG-42(at 62rc) so without having to be as hard S30V can stay more ductile (less brittle) without any edge retention sacrifices. Lets give Vanadium a hand for that benefit...

And...for the commercial...with Paul Bos heat treating our blades we get a consistent microstructure with a repeatability that no one else in our industry can touch. I give my dad credit for bringing heat treating in-house in the late 60's. Our consistent results in a production enviornment always surprise the companies who supply the steel.

jest goes to show it is the chef and the cooking !
and not jest the stuff in the recipe that makes it so good...
